Got a report of a convoy, and intercepted it late at night. Called in the contact, but I wasn't going to waste a chance at a surprise night attack of my own waiting for a pack to form.
Sunk one small ship before I had to back off. Over the course of the rest of the night/early a.m, in several engage/disengage actions, sunk three more, all the while sending contact reports.
Ran out of bow torpedoes except for the external, but I wasn't going to let a convoy loose to load that. I only load these in daylight, flat calm, dead stop boat.
So I just shadowed it for most of the next day and night sending in reports to form a pack.
Just past 2200, received notice the pack was in place. I still had no bow torpedoes, and wasn't in a position for a stern attack as I was astern of the convoy the entire time.
Figured I'd watch to see what happened. 2245 the pack struck. Within minutes two ships are ablaze, even saw a torpedo strike on one. Lucky timing; just happened to be looking at it through the binos at the time.
Once the convoy was hit, it started evasive maneuvers, and I had one ship present a slim/fair chance at a stern torpedo shot. It missed, longer range snap shot, as an escort had come into the area near where one of the hit ships sank and I didn't want to close any more.
That was only the start. I backed off after my shot; the escorts were busy blazing away at the pack. So for the next several game hours I just watched the light show, between burning ships and escort/ai sub battles.
Looked like flashbulbs at a concert for awhile, in the distance. Figure tomorrow, I'll then load my external and try to recontact the convoy.
Sorry for the long rant, probably old hat to some of you, but I was impressed. Been subsuming since AOD and this was one of the most immersive times ever.
Post some pics tomorrow.
