Happy Anzac day to those in Australia and New Zealand and all who celebrate this solemn occasion. Lest we forget their sacrifices.

Back when it was the anniversary of 1914-1915 in the '100 Years' thread we talked about how SMS Emden kept the first ANZAC convoy from sailing for several months, which inadvertently set up Emden's downfall. I remember that convoy finally sailing across the Indian Ocean and up the Red Sea to Egypt, and the beginning of their training. It was so strange having the hindsight to know that that training would lead to their first big battle, which was of course Gallipoli. When the anniversary of that campaign finally came it was a tragic wonder watching it unfold.
Curiosity prompted me to look, and I found that there are a large number of Turkish memorials on the Gallipoli Peninsula. From their point of view they were defending their homeland from a foreign invader. This is not to say anything against the brave Australian and New Zealander men who fought and died there. It's just to remember that there are two sides to every battle, and the soldiers of both sides believe in what they are doing and fight for a cause they believe is the right one.
May they never be forgotten.
