OLtzS Hammesfahr was commander at the time U-55 went down in AM53 on patrol 6.
Hammesfahr had received his U-Boat war badge, 1st and 2nd class Iron Cross, and Knights Cross of the Iron Cross.
He was considered knowledgeable and dedicated to his crew.
His skill was noticed in the Baltic Operations against Poland, and was hand selected by GrossAdmiral Doenitz to infiltrate Scapa Flow. After successfully navigating Holm Sound, he sank the Renown, and was honored by the Fuher personally for his contribution to the war effort.
His following patrols would lead to over 133,000 GRT sent to the bottom of the Atlantic.
Patrol 6 found U-55 stalking a small convoy inbound for England in a medium fog at night. A Granville medium freighter, and Ranger medium Tanker were escorted by a Tribal Destroyer. After stalking the group for a short distance, U-55 sank the freighter on the surface. Now swinging around to hit the tanker on her starboard side with a stern shot, U-55 kept the tanker between it and the destroyer. The watch on the tanker was vigilant after the freighter went down, and noticed U-55's conning tower. Spot lights engulfed the watch crew, while the destroyer made a sharp turn around the bow of the tanker. Several serious explosions to the conning tower followed. The order to dive was given. U-55's fate was sealed. The pressure hull took serious damage. Heavy leaking began. The crew worked tirelessly to manage it. U-55 sank like a stone to the bottom, resting at 125m. The crew kept working as the leaking became uncontrollable.
U-55 and her crew are now on eternal patrol.
