The shift into a knowledge-based, tech-heavy service economy has hit many workers hard–and even decimated whole regions, like the “Rust Belt” area from Pittsburgh and Cleveland to Detroit and beyond. A generation of skilled workers, trained to make complex machines like automobiles, or capable of operating the machinery necessary to produce the steel that undergirds much of our society–they’re all out of jobs, and the jobs are never coming back.


But that’s the last recession–what about the next one? Here we compile ten jobs that are on the endangered species list–and the shockingly reasonable salaries that will go with them. Unfortunately for many Americans, the question of “what next” doesn’t have any easy answer. But knowing the risks in store in many of these occupations–even some surprising ones in the tech industry–can better prepare you for the uncertain future ahead.

I am concerned that everyone who is not in the top 5 percent of their competence hierarchy and who does not own substantial capital would not be able to generate subsistance earnings. And that any system that attempts to fix this through re-distribution of wealth would fail.

Living in the Cleveland area, I can easily say this is bunk. I know I can go out tomorrow and get offers for 3-4 decently paying skilled and unskilled labor jobs if I wanted (I know this because I've had to do it). I know this is unique to this area, as the Youngstown and Detroit areas are much harder hit (I can't speak for Pitt, I don't know), but to lump a huge region into one just because it seems like it should be is complete bunk.



Some areas of this region are expanding and growing, some are hard hit. Lumping them all together is idiocy.

The only time there is lost prosperity in this country is when our leaders stop following nationalist policies that benefit us, and start giving away the farm. Pretty much what they've been doing since Nixon went to China, until now. :03:

The answer to the loss of certain industries has always been that new jobs would come along to replace the old ones and that has held true for some time but now with automation becoming increasingly prevalent I have to wonder if there will be some tipping point that will leave huge numbers of people unable to support themselves and their families.

If only the days when one could work 40 hours week would return in limey ville England .
Up north the majority of jobs at the lower end of the pay scale are now all agency eight hours work over seven days as and when required .
But one has to turn up evey day at eight am sharp tobe sent home if your lucky you may get two/three hours work a week .
But £35-£40 in bus fares every week for £24 weekly earnings aint economically viable for any individual.
If you would have told me in 1982 at the age of seventeen that i would be retired at fifty i would of laughed.
Now im fifty three and ive come full circle ive come to terms with being one of yesterdays men me and retirement are buddies of sorts.
So how do you spend your time i listen to the back catalogue of Big Country and play that new Simulation game thats the envy of the civilized world Wolfpack.
I also go to a community craft center in Durham that has a woodwork shop i go every Monday and touch base with other people young and old and we all take
a interest in what everyones doing.
also making new clients feel welcome and help them gain confidence get their mojo back so to speak.
