Hi all,

Sonar guy says contact on 280. Line on the map shows more like 260.

When I listen manually, I hear him the loudest at maybe 265.

I get a range of 11000 yards.

Now, when I get to the map, what bearing line should I trust? I know he's 10.5nm away, just not sure on what line.

Also, in the convoy training mission, how do you deal with multiple contacts down the same lines of bearing?

Sometimes there's a delay between the call-out by the crewmember and the beaing you find directly at the sonar station. Believe the one at the sonar station. Take another reading just in case. The loudest return is always a matter of judgment. Trust the bearing readout on the notepad.

As far as multiple returns on the same narrow range of bearings, you're on your own, just as the real submariners were. We only have a few sounds for ships, though, and all like ships sound exactly the same. In real life each ship had its own sound and really good sound men could track a single ship in a crowd. Us? Nope!

From long range, an approximate bearing is all you're going to get. You will want to plot an intercept course, so a precise bearing isn't critical. As you get closer, you'll need and will get more accurate bearings.
