I'm getting impatient for fishing season. It's hard-water season here in my part of northern Canada but with the up'n'down temperatures, the lakes and rivers are a soup of slush and not safe so I may have to wait for ice-out later in the spring.
Let's hear from the Subsim anglers out there. Are you fishing now? Waiting for the melt? Salt water? Fresh water? What species do you target? What gear do you use? If you have pics, I'm sure we'd all love to see 'em.

My brother and I went fishing for tench in the local lakes (this was me sat there in 1980)... tench love cheese. We also used a lot of sweetcorn as ground bait

It's looking pretty packed out there on the ice. I'm a little ways north of MN up in NWO. Walleye country, although I'm more of a trout guy.
My daughter's first fish was a perch about that size back when she was 4. Caught it on her Disney rod and it was a huge moment! She's 7 now and has the fishing bug pretty bad, thanks to dad. Got her first decent sized pike last year too; had to get help from one of her friends to bring it in while dad fumbled with the camera trying to capture the moment.

Spring this way means NHL playoff Hockey along with beer league baseball games, picnics and motorcycle rides. I know conservation people are making preparations to stock the local lakes with trout and such.
That being said, where do you fish and do you catch and release ? If you catch and eat them, any great recipes ? What fish do you prefer ?
Congrats by the way on introducing your daughter to the great outdoors.

@Commander Wallace: I'm a shore-fisherman, so I prefer inland lakes and rivers. I like the peace and solitude of fishing and I like being out in the wilderness, so I try to find and fish places with few (or no) people around. I target brook trout mostly and if they're a decent eating size, I might keep one or two but mostly I catch and release. I teach my daughter to do the same. Her first fish was a perch (about 12", if I recall) that we cleaned, cooked and ate together so that's her preferred fish. I stick to basics for preparing them. Walleye and perch are great fried in a beer batter. Trout, I usually stuff 'em with lemon, garlic, etc and cook 'em in the fire or on the barbecue.
@Eichhörnchen: Cheese is a new one; never tried that but I might just to see what happens. Once, out at the family camp, I put beef jerky on a hook and actually got a hit but it spit the hook before I could bring it in. Didn't even see what it was but the jerky was gone. I tried again but nothing. Whatever it was, apparently it didn't care for beef jerky. No worries...more for me.

Looking at the article I linked to, cheese is very versatile and can be used on its own (see the tip about pushing the hook right through... because it hardens in the cold water) or maybe as a matrix for making boilies. My brother was the real angler... I don't know whether he used it for those

@Eichhörnchen: I've been checking out the different baits and techniques on that site for much of the morning. I haven't accomplished much at work today...I'll be sending my boss your way if he catches me. :)
