i was sunk by gunfire from either a PB4Y or a Liberator and i would like to know what guns they can bring to bear.
i've checked the Aircraft folder and perused the .EQP and .SIM files but there are weapons details there. bomb details, yes, gun details, no.
how does one determine what guns a patrol aircraft has in the game?

Look at the .sim file with S3D

thanks but been there, did that. just has AAgun entries. not a byte about which guns.

The guns are 3D modeled into the main dat of the aircraft.
The sim controls those so shell settings and such mock say a .50 cal or whatever said craft carried in real life.

How accurate those settings are is probably based on who edited the settings for any given mod.

I don't make this stuff up. It's just the way the files work as they are. ;)

One COULD do the aircraft guns like Ships are where the eqp assigns the guns.
But that would require a lot of work to remove the 3D model and replace with a node.
Then all the work to change an arse load of other stuff.

The upside would be changeable weapons based on dates and such.

Ehh... what's the diff between a 50 cal and a 20mm cannon when you're in a submarine on the surface?... :har: - sorry, mark! :salute:

Now, old un-reliable wikipedia says
Armament
3 .30 cal (7.62 mm) machine guns (two in nose turret, one in ventral hatch at tail)
2 .50 cal (12.7 mm) machine guns (one in each waist blister)
4,000 lb (1,814 kg) of bombs or depth charges; torpedo racks were also available
at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consolidated_PBY_Catalina

Dependent upon the mod, your boat might be very thin-skinned also...

ok, i took a look at the PB4Y.dat file and you are correct: there are guns modeled there..... and they appear to reference B17 and B24 guns but when i go looking for B17 and B24 guns i only find they have same type of config.
so, whatever guns they are, they are hardcoded and not readily definable or even discernable in the file structure,
i was not looking to change them, just get an understanding of what they were. i do not think that either side lost a sub from aircraft gunfire during the war so it seems as if the Ubisoft team made the aircraft weapons a bit more potent than reality. ok. i get it.
thanks for the quick response.

Jeff is on the right path there, but you need to look a little further into the wpn_cannon entry in the sim file. Look at the ammo_storage entry and cross reference that with the Shells.dat. Using the AFB_USFighter as an example, it is armed with 20mm AP rounds.

Nope. Not hard coded. It's like ETR3(SS) stated.
You need to follow the links to get the final results.
Kind of convoluted so it takes some time (WAY TO MUCH) to see the big picture.
:haha:

Probably why many Modders burn out and just fade away.
