Having announced the fact earlier in the week that the wife and I are expecting our first grandchild from our daughter and her husband next May, my son waltzed into the house this morning to inform us he has just passed his merchant navy Masters exam.

We were aware he was on study leave but as for previous exams he kept the examination date a secret so as not to create his parents any anxiety.

This could well be the best Christmas day ever, especially as we have all the family at ours for dinner and I'll probably refer to him as Captain James but only for the one day :arrgh!:

Happy to hear that your family is doing so well! Some good news :)

If you start calling him Captain you probably will have to continue with that, for the rest of your life :D

Congrats all the way around Jim. It's good you will all be together this Holiday season.

Remember, there is more than one way to be a Captain. :D

Wow! Captain for a son ... how proud you deserve to be :yep:

The only captain's I knew were in the US Navy and they were all great men worthy to be called captain. A captain is someone you can trust with your life and a good crew is someone he can trust when he's asleep or ashore on leave.

Have you had a vacation on a ship your son was on yet? I may have missed it, uh?

Much appreciation and respect for all your kind words, the 'Captain' thanks you all as well :)

@Mr Quatro: No, we haven't been on a cruise on any vessel he was working on up to now but we have experienced a couple of day visits when the vessel is on the Tyne.

I'm not sure he would appreciate his mom sneaking up on the bridge and following/stalking him wherever he went :D

Maybe one day.

Question Jim.

Would the new Captain be considered young, average or old to have gotten his Masters Rating?

Question Jim.

Would the new Captain be considered young, average or old to have gotten his Masters Rating?

He's here at my home now and he answers: "Young, the average sea time needed is between twelve and fifteen years but I have been fortunate to qualify after ten years".

Cheers Marcel but if you check the date on his certificate it shows he passed his exam of competency on 23rd November last year and it has taken this long for the MCA to update his (seagoing passport etc.) and return it to him.

Not that he's bothered because without them he isn't allowed to operate at sea :03:
