Washington Capitals right winger or goon, Tom Wilson was suspended for 20 games today by the NHL.

Quote : The right winger, who plays on Washington's top line with captain Alex Ovechkin, was ejected for the hit on St. Louis Blues center Oskar Sundqvist in the second period of the teams' exhibition game on Sunday. Wilson had an in-person hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety in New York on Wednesday.

Wilson's suspension, which he can appeal, is the longest handed down by the league since Raffi Torres of the San Jose Sharks was banned a record 41 games in 2015, also for a preseason hit.

The league noted that Wilson "is considered a repeat offender" — and, indeed, this is hardly the first time the sixth-year player has been in trouble for the way he has taken out an opponent.
He was suspended twice because of preseason hits a year ago, then had to sit out three games during the playoffs for a check to the head that broke Pittsburgh Penguins center Zach Aston-Reese's jaw and caused a concussion.

"In short, including preseason and postseason games played, this is Wilson's fourth suspension in his last 105 games, an unprecedented frequency of suspensions in the history of the Department of Player Safety," the NHL video says.

Wilson's fourth ban in less than 13 months will cost him nearly a quarter of the 82-game regular season — only five NHL players have been suspended longer for on-ice play — and $1.26 million in salary.

I think Wilson should have been banned for longer than 20 games. If the NHL Dept. of player safety is serious about avoiding injuries and sending a message, Wilson should have been banned for maybe 50 games because of his status as a repeat offender and resident goon of the Capitals.

Pro football lost me a long time ago. Too little game play and too much commercial.

^ Tom Wilson is a National Hockey League player. With regards to commercials, I usually record the games and watch them later, that way I can edit out the commercials.

Everybody knows that rules only apply to those on the "right". LOL Who knows how many illegal hits their left winger has under his belt, but nobody reports on that. :D:D:D

well 20 games is still a hefty suspension so it is a step in the right direction. It was not that long ago where a hit like that would only get an in game penalty or only a few games suspension.

The league is moving in the right direction, but it is an entertainment business at it's core so there is resitance to Moving too quickly and alienating fans.

Eventually the suspension and/or fines will be high enough to effectively discourage this type of behavior.

I was going to say Buddahaid's political views are not relevant or germane to the issues at hand. Then I thought one of you wise guys would say in their best Jackie Gleason / Buford T justice voice, “ the German's have got nothing to do with this. “:haha:

It's not just the 20 games but also the 1.26 million dollars he will lose by not playing in the 20 games. A million here and a million there and pretty soon, we're talking about real money. :03:
