I think I know the drill around here, but when I signed up an hour or so ago it was because I couldn't find records of my old username (as best I remember it) and knew too that I had changed internet providers about a year ago).

So until and unless the admins dunn me (but also hopefully restore?...which I think doubtful...my old account), I'm a newbie. But one with experience.

I've been sub simming since the Avalon Hill board-game days (I believe it was titled "Submarine" as was based on WWII physical models.

"Red Storm Rising" well after that, but it required a decent PC first be acquired...

...Then..."Wolfpack," as best I remember it...and then it got a lot better with "Aces of the Deep." Aces pushed me hard at times, and I loved it.

And then the rest of the genre you all now know, up to SS5. But, in all honesty, the last one I spent much time with was SS3. In those days I would "plot" my attacks across the screen using a protractor and calculator...and the last great attack I remember scoring was a LONG plot...five or six hours...when I sunk one of the ocean going tugs north and east of England. Took me about fifty...maybe sixty course changes to get into the position for a good shot.

So I'm a newbie...but also an old head...if I could just find my old I.D. :D

In any case, good to know you guys. I've contacted the admins about the possibility of recreating my old I.D. (or not)...just for the record...and am still awaiting a reply. If I figure out who I "was," then I will re-introduce myself again before too long. And if I can't, then...

...these are my pants, so I (still) :03:must be me!

Thanks for the welcome back.

In those days...I'm guessing it was four or five years back when I was most active, although I've kept up with the occasional visit back too--I own SS5--I was primarily a sim-racer (not a sub simmer) back in those days, and so I think my ID here was simply my own real name: Christopher Snow.

If anyone remembers me, that would maybe help. Otherwise, and in all honesty, the PC that I used then has long since melted down, so I probably won't be able to re-create my old profile.

In which case: "Well...these are my new pants, so I must be me!"

But know too that I'm still a fan of the old-school. And might be even a bit competent with it (refresher course needed, but then...).

I remember most of how to run a plot...and I do have patience too.

I HAVE sent an email to the admins, but may not have included my remembered username, simply because the search engine wouldn't show me myself.

Now that Eichhornchen (Thank you again!) has found me in the threads, I'd be happiest, obviously, to reclaim my old I.D.

That will require some sort of reactivation by one of the admins, but also a deactivation of this one. Good with that here, even though I use the current I.D. in other places and for other purposes.

If you click on "Community" (along the top of the page) then select "Captain's Roster", you can search for anyone... past or present... I don't think you ever get deleted from Subsim unless you ask to be (although they may make an exception in my case one day :haha:)

Glad to have been able to find you, buddy... I'm sure that reactivating you will not be a problem for Onkel Neal :salute::up:

I was just thinking... if you have the same email address as before, you should be able to log on as Christopher Snow then go through the "Forgot your password?" routine. I can't see why this wouldn't work as your account is still there. You could ask Neal first... he'd tell you

You would, however, then have two accounts and (as this is not permitted) he would kill the unwanted one

Good idea. I have a new internet provider, but I kept the old ID when I ported over, so I will try to contact Neal and see what can be done. Obviously it makes better sense to revert to the old I.D., for any number of reasons.

Thank you for your help. I have tried, twice now to PM you in reply and also to Onkel Neal to request he investigate recovering my old I.D. but when I investigate my own P.M. "Sent" file I see no PM's sent.

Could be I have my own internet I.D. tightened down too tight, such that even PM's dont go through (which would explain a lot).

As it happens I recently did tie my ID down more tightly to avoid the intrusion of Ads, with the help of one of my fellow sim-racers who happens to be an IT expert...and I suspect this is not only the cure (for the Ads) but perhaps also the source of the PM problem.

I will try to sort it out, although I won't be able to consult with him until later this week (four or five days) at the earliest. So, while I truly do appreciate your help, I probably can't do anything to further Neal "re-finding me" for several days at best.

...after hitting the submit button. Gotta be some clamped down filter or port at my end, as this is clearly an unusual situation. Still no reply from the fellow who set me up with the ad-blocker (I strongly suspect that's my problem). It's uBlock Origin 1.17, and I suspect I just have it clamped down too tight...or that Neal's site demands I open up for Google or Facebook or somesuch. In which case...nah. I can just stick with the current username, forego PM's and...

Thank you Neal, and I got the login/merge details. Just heard back from the guy who set me up with the uBlocker and he says it shouldn't affect any rights or close ports, but only affects scripts and calls to other URL's so this should work. I will want to be wide awake and have pen and pad nearby when I login (with your details), and that's unlikely to happen until Wed, but then...it should work! Thanks to you and E, and the rest.

I will probably try this Wed (I have to focus first on a race Tuesday night) and do some cockpit alterations involving power tools. :D

...and I'm pretty sure it was some political issue or battle...

...so I will be avoiding those. Still primarily a sim-racer, but I'm getting older, have some body breakdown issues (half ruptured left achilles which was missed a couple years back and which may not be repairable now), so I'm back to...the more intellectual pursuits. I could still walk 360 around a scope, so, I'll gradually get myself back in the saddle.

Feeling like I want to try SH4, even though I also own SH5--I've at least seen a convoy thru the scope with SH4, but it was a year or more back.

I happen to have a 43" 4K monitor here in front of a standing desk( maybe 15" from my glasses, so it's a BIG picture), recommended to me by a Texas lawyer who was STILL using such rig even into his nineties...his actually was twelve feet long and he moved between four of them along his..."bar." Astounding old gent, and STILL in practice even at that age. I only have this one though, and the days when I used to plot with a protractor, ruler and calculator across the face of a 21"CRT are long gone now. I don't really want to wear the face of this flatscreen out either...so do we have usable "virtual" tools like these in SH4 or SH5?

I will certainly ask too in those subforums, but if anyone has a good kickoff with mods, tools, etc for SH4, I'm inclined to start there.

Thanks once again for everyone's help getting me back in my old pants! :Kaleun_Salute:

In terms of SH4, I can certainly help you.
For example, you could take a look at my mod compilation, it's a big carefree pack, which is relatively easy to install, and the player can gradually adjust the level of difficulty.
If interested, just click on my signature below.

Then there's the great Mod Forts Ultimate, which is still in development (beta status).
Upon completion of FortsU, however, this will be the authoritative Giga mod for SH4 in the Pacific Theater.

Further general SH4 technical support from THEBERBSTER can be found here:

Have fun with the reading.

Christopher Snow
10-04-18, 04:34 PM
Oh, I'm awake, but it's gonna take me some time yet to get even remotely back up to speed. It's really my own evening project now that the demands of good weather are starting to dwindle (and into the winter too, now that I probably can't ski anymore).

This wireless keyboard, for example is entirely unusable in even a simulated war-fighting situation. Horrible lag at times, it misses characters constantly...and yet the receiver itself is located just five feet away atop the computer case. The wireless mouse two feet further away is just fine.

So I bought a replacement wired keyboard instead...

...and (of COURSE!) the USB cable is about four feet too short to put it into service. I could tell you more about my sim-and-gaming rig, but in the end it's just up to me to sort out the problems and the configuration anyway...
...and I don't want to "re-start" out by being a crushing bore.:k_confused:

Bleiente
10-04-18, 04:55 PM
Mhmm ... I also use a wireless keyboard and mouse, but have no problems.

But I see, the shortcomings of technology make you totally finished... a new way of revitalizing body and mind. :haha:

Christopher Snow

My particular issue ATM is deciding on which side of a doorway to semi-permanently configure the PC. Right now I have to physically disconnect the tower and move it (I know it's always said no-one will do that more than a few times, but I'm the exception to the rule--still, it's not easy).

Either way, I'll be crossing quite a few cables, but those can be located underneath a "pseudo door threshold," and my inclination now is to keep the PC located near the 43" display (on the command station side) rather than on the sim-racing side.

This is not a view of my actual sim-racing rig, but mine is VERY similar (mine is actual lifesize, while this one is about 3/4), including the cutout of the lower center of the screen so that the legs can project through and onto the pedals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ev7cFzgpJ7s

Immersive, but as you can also see, entirely impractical for subsimming, as 1/6th of the screen is entirely invisible/gone.

Besides, a sub skipper stands anyway. :03::ping:

The PC is entirely adequate, btw: 32G, 1080ti, SSD, etc...and the 43" monitor is 4K....

Which brings up a question: Anyone actually use voice commands for sub-simming? I have used them in the past with racing for setting up pitstops, and they were nearly essential for oval racing (because I can't type and drive fer sh**), but I was just curious if anyone here has investigated that idea.

Well I definitely not - the keyboard and mouse commands are short and concise, there are no misunderstandings.
If something goes wrong, only the CO has made one or more mistakes.

Well, as I alluded to, your keyboard is more reliable than mine, but I'll solve it. Powered USB extension cable (putting together an order now for several of them, in fact).

Also bought a powered 4K HDMI repeater/splitter recently and that'll come online too. A BIG part of the thinking there is the connectors on the repeater can take the wear and tear, rather than the v. card connectors ($40 vs. $800) to replace each, and two can become four if necessary (for VR).

This becomes even more important if you are looking at something like a 2080ti, where the costs are half again higher. I might be, with a ThreadRipper build (but that's down the road, and not needed for anything I'm doing now, sim/gaming wise).

Cool, yes, but overkill, IMO. I'm always looking more toward "multi-discipline" PC platforms, and those too that are affordable and accessible for the masses. I've seen the railroad specific and airliner specific home built in's described there.

For me, a big, vertical flatscreen in front of me is enough. I COULD, if I were so inclined, replace a portion of the flat desk in front of me with an upward facing screen...probably covered with glass...to use as a plotting board: The sort you can write on with a grease pencil if need be, but that too seems like overkill IF I can use similar (graphic) tools on the screen plot itself, and I suspect I can by now. That would be enough.

I don't need to grab onto the periscope handles provided I can imagine using them to pivot the scope through a 360 sweep. And from what I remember of SH3/(and limited intro to) SH4, that's good enough.

Voice command would be cool IF you could tailor it to real naval commands, but at the level I last used it, that wasn't possible. I think I last used "Game Commander 2," which let you save three voice commands for each game command (for sample comparison purposes).

You could say, for example: "Come left ten degrees" and in a typical subsim you could "assign" that to the command "come left ten degrees." Might work...might not.

Similarly then for five, and then single degrees. What you COULDN'T do (then at least) was say: "Come left to a heading of 335." As a commander, you would have to do the math yourself in increments. If you were previously at 355 you could say "come left ten"...and then repeat it (to come left a total of twenty)...but you might have to adjust it +/- 1 after that to "trim it up" too.

As a WWII commander, I like the idea of issuing commands by voice, true, and specifically so I don't have to fiddle with mouse and keyboard...and command station.

But that's maybe something for SH6. [?]:Kaleun_Wink:

Oh - that bad?
From everything I read about SH5, I never tried the game.
Personally, the SH4 series has the best performance as a pure WWII submarine game. It starts with the low load times and stops at the efficient team management, the rest can be adapted via modifications accordingly.

If there were not the usual Ubisoft's usual mistakes - they make the most coined modders totally exhausted in the end...

:yep:

Not sure I'd go as far as to say SH4 is a pure sub sim, it looks somewhat appealing to me, though what puts me off is that the celestial body positions, clock etc are not accurate, that's a real killer for me; considering a large chunk of being at sea is sailing/navigation, with a small fraction for attack.

On the mouse issue, one might be able to use an external program to map a different input device to a mouse axis.
