Got a bit out of touch with all that, so do not know when they introduced that ban, which now they seem to take back, under pressure from an angry public.

Mind you: not a single real world attack with Spectre and Meltdown has taken place so far. Prooves-of-concept have been described, but no real world attacks and abuses so far have been reported. Not one. Not a single, tiny, minor one. None.
For that, accepting losses to your system's performance due to microcode patches, performance that you - and I! - paid hard cash for, sounds like a very lousy deal to me.
