I was expecting some of you had mentioned this.

Tragic :nope:
Heard about this on the news some hours ago. The bridge was undergoing a maintenance

An investigation will hopefully tell us why the bridge collapsed.
If it was because of this maintenance or if there was an hidden failure in the structure.
If it is the lastest-Many thousands bridges around the world has to be looked at.
I guess the Italian want to know why this could happen and if they can blame some for this.

They said on TV its not the first bridge in Italy collapsing, its just the first incident of such dimension. But it has happened several times per year already in past years. The road infrastructure is said to be so weak in Italy that after heavy rains roads can get hollowed out and cars just disappear in huge earth holes. Money would be there, but the adminstration works so slowly in Italy that the bureaucratic procedures lead to just a fraction of reserved fundings for infrastrture maintenance get called up.

They said the authorities already knew it was bad, but that they didn't know what to do about it (spells money to fix the problem not available to me) :yep:

One UK news source has said it is the fault of the EU for not releasing sufficient funds.
Death toll is now 39 with more expected.

Thats what the Italian govenrment, not really EU friendly anyway, claims. News over here says the funds are there - but do not get called up by delayed work flow and incompetent administration of the Italian officials/government.
