View Full Version : Question regarding Soviet/Russian 650mm tubes

I dunno

I've been looking around recently, and there's actually little concrete info out there on these beasts.
I'm looking for some info beyond what NAVWEAPS has to offer:
1. Is the 65-73 really unguided, is it just a pure wake-homer, or does it have a passive or active/passive homing head in addition? How about the 65-76?
2. Does either of these torpedoes have a wire-guidance option?
3. Other than the 65-73,65-76, SS-N-16, and (with adapter sleeve) 533mm weapons, were there any other weapons developed for these tubes?
4. Are the wiki numbers for carried rounds (8 in Victor III, 12 in Akula) accurate?
5. What rounds do they carry today? are the large tubes being phased out? I understand the Yasens may not have larger tubes, but what about the other projects?
Thanks!

Most of the 650mm have been phased out mainly now only being used by SS-N- 15 & 16 pretty much all the 65 version torpedoes are gone the 65-76 is definitely out (went after kursk)

65-73 is not guided and was intended to be a nuclear tipped torpedo it has since been phased out.

there is a 65-73A which came about in the early 90's i do believe it has now been phased out as its powered by HTP like the rest of the 65 series.

I do think they did try and re engineer a 65cm torpedo with electric motors and wire guided but to be honest i'm not sure if it materialized

Ok, thanks!
Considering the lack of guidance, it'd be fair to say that the low-speed setting would be unlikely to be used against shipping, would it not?

These series were designed primarily for the use against merchant ships, most tankers and bulk carriers are classified as low and slow (low free-board low top speed) ideal for unguided torpedo or wake homers as they don't have the agility to out manouvre or the speed to out run they also sit much lower in the water.

At the time of these torpedoes most merchant ships were hanging around the 12-15 knots top speeds around 18 knots today some of the fastest merchant ships achieve up to 26 knots but most of the big container ships sit around 21 knots while tankers remain around 16-18 knots but still dont have the agility of a DDG or even a carrier.

I hadn't thought of that, makes sense.
Thanks!
