Hey Guys,

I've haven't been to subsim for a long time. But I've gotten the itch to start playing SH again.

I've learned coding (Java, html, javasricpt, css) and I want to write a program that can calculate some useful informatian like:

* intercept course @desired speed
* calculate fuel consumption
* plot target course and speed based on: own ship course/speed, target bearing/range and elapsed time.

Could anyone point me to some useful sources where I could find the relevant math?

Before all the electronic RADAR collision avoidance wizardry. We used grease pencils to plot on the scopes PPI and Maneuvering boards to determine what you seek.

If you know your own course and speed and take a range and bearing to target say every three minutes you can easily determine its true and relative course and speed, even in games like Silent Hunter.

You can find reprints of the U.S. Navy Maneuvering Board Manual Pub.217 and a pack of Maneuvering Boards on Amazon. All you need then is a watch and a pencil.

Maneuvering Board

Oh ya forgot. In addition to the watch and pencil you'll need a set of dividers, compass with sharp lead and a Weems plotter will be very helpful for accurately transferring information to the "Mo" Board.

But I'm sure there's some App out there that does all of this for you

I'd suggest typing the word 'learning' in front of each of your three bullet points in the google search box. I did so for the first and quite a few intersting hits came up.

Haven't checked it out in many years but I though it was the neatest thing since sliced bread back then. Should still get the job done.

I think there's Android and Apple Mo Board apps out there too.

...and here I thought Naval math was telling taxpayers an asset is going to cost $2 billion when it actually ends up costing $3 billion. :D

Maneuvering Board

That is actually, as the title says, a radar plotting sheet. It is very similar to a maneuvering board and is used in much the same way. However, a true maneuvering board has a couple of extra features which I believe make solving maneuvering problems a little faster and easier.

I have a high resolution image of a NIMA maneuvering board, if anyone is interested. Please contact me and I will send you a link to it. I'm reluctant to post the link here because I'm not entirely sure about potential copyright issues. I also have an acquaintance who sells pads of these on his website, and I wouldn't want to hurt his business.

That program is what led me to Subsim. I can vouch for its usefulness, although it is a little cumbersome to use at times.

Pretty much all maneuvering problems can be solved using trigonometry. A quick glance through the maneuvering board manual should be evidence of that, as you will see that the solution to nearly every problem involves drawing a triangle.

It's worth noting that these same procedures can be used to figure out firing solutions for torpedoes as well.

seawolves red & blue books are handy but for me a pencil and paper to hand works just fine for speed and distance with intercepting courses
