We had her lie next to it for scale'
A Bay Area marine biologist says the image he took Sunday of his colleague with a dead great white shark at a beach in Aptos, Calif., was not an indulgent photo op and was meant to show the scale of the animal.
Giancarlo Thomae (http://www.thomaephotography.com/) and the woman in the photo were at the beach assisting UC Santa Cruz scientists identify the shark and load it in a vehicle to be taken to a university lab for further research.
Thomae took a photograph of the fellow scientist lying in the sand next to the eight-foot, nine-inch male with a mouthful of daggers and posted it to Facebook.

It seems a little ridiculous, there are lots of other possibilities to measure a fish's length.
