:arrgh!:
What was he thinking? A road test at high speed!
That is the same APC I drove for awhile in the Army.
Thirteen tons and can get up to 60mph (personal experience). Not something I would recommend though. Scary.

Oh man, if that was me I'd have driven it right to Robert Mueller's doorstep with all those cop cars with sirens and lights in tow. I bet Mueller would have had a cow. :D

Ready to head out for run to the local liquor locker for some cold remedy without the boss knowing? Top left looks like your helmet is covering some sort of transponder. :O:

:) Naw we weren't that sophisticated back then. It's just a flashing yellow popcorn light so the Germans won't run their BMW's into our cleverly camouflaged vehicles.
^Nice picture back up D
Cool but that would be massive overkill against an M577. You can penetrate the sides of all M113 series APC's with a rifle round. All it's Armor is supposed to do is provide some protection against flying shrapnel from nearby artillery round explosions.
That's why you often see pictures of troops from the Vietnam war riding on the top of their tracks and lining the floors with sandbags. It was safer outside than in.

I once spun an M113 on ice. We had the road treads on and we, in the convoy, hit a large patch of very thick ice. I did not believe one could spin an APC, but I proved it.
Imagine 12 tons going where ever it wanted to. :o:o
I quickly learned that there is no "counter steering" in an M113. It was a matter of hang on and be thankful that an M113 can back out of pretty much anything it can spin into.
It was quite the ... sporty.. ride. :o:o

I can well imagine having slid my track on the ice a time or three. I'll bet your pucker factor was quite high. :)

I don't think I needed any seat belt. My butt was not separating from that seat. :D
My biggest worry was the hatch coming down and conking me on the melon. Because of the extended deck the 577 series drivers hatch only opens up halfway leaving it poised over the back of the drivers head like a giant 50lb frying pan held back by just a spring hook latch. I used to practice dropping the seat hoping to avoid leaving my teeth on the hatch ring (or worse) if I ever hit something or rolled it over but thankfully I never had to do it for real.
