Got my SH3 from steam, LSH on it, no problem (run as windows 7 compatibility, and root)

i concur, the Steam version is just as good (or even better, considering the latest patches are already included) as the physical disc

I've just purchased a Steam copy of Silent Hunter III following a CTD issue I'm currently experiencing. From what I've found so far, nothing is different between the Steam version and the disc version except one is a digital media while the other a physical. They both run the same, are patched the same and load the same files.

That said, I would like to point out that if you use certain mods that patch your SH3.exe, technically you're not playing through Steam. To be specific, the Steam overlay will not load and Steam doesn't recognize the game as being played, even if added as a "non-Steam game". In effect, it is as though you're playing the physical copy.

When all is said and done however, at the current price, you're not missing out on much by purchasing a digital copy

Does using mod sh3.exe conflict with steam?

I use Silent Hunter III via Steam as I just can't be bothered to do it any other way.

Works well with GWX3 and NYGM Tonnage War.

I can't speak for other mods since I have not used them.

Note when you are installing certain mods or packages that ask where your Silent Hunter III install is located....

In my case, that path is:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Silent Hunter 3

Hope this helps.

No progress is tracked on Steam and the overlay is disabled. If using the standard, unmodded SH3.exe then you are fine.

Thanks! I probably lost the media long ago so need to buy steam version to play (better to made a disk image or something). I then may need to research compatibility thing (win10 64bit), tho..

wish I could play SH3 on my iPad pro since the hardware should be more than powerful enough.

Is it possible to get a widescreen mod for SH3 on steam? I own the physical copy, but it's a pain to patch the game. I am thinking of buying SH3 on steam, but obviously want to play in widescreen.

Can you help?

Or a resolution mod, it's annoying to have my 1600x1200 monitor run on 1024x768, and it also messes up my second monitor for some reeason when I run fullscreen.

I have used Win10, Steam, SHIII via Steam, GWX3 and Widescreen GUI 1920x1080 (Ahnenerbe) with no problems.

The attention to detail with Ahnenerbe is outstanding. I have one issue (having used it with GWX3 only) is the Whiz-wheel on the periscope is not accurate for range. Nor are the mil readings on the scope. (which might be a GWX issue?). For example: with a 6x periscope setting, a 25M target height (mast or whatever) should give a range of 2000 meters at 50mils.
It does not.
If this was fixed up the mod would be near PERFECT.
PERFECT would be another option to get rid of the Whizwheels for newer scopes circa 41 and after. I will defer to Hitman or some other historical observer of this area of interest. But it would be unlikely for a VIIC sub to have any whizwheels on the scopes (as if it was part of the stadimeter...which we know SHIII does not accurately replicate anyway.)
Again though Ahnenerbe is just really nice.

I've using the Steam version of SHIII, and it worked perfectly. I downloaded the GWX megamod, and put into the Steam folder where I keep SHIII. Everything works fine, until I attempt to start a campaign. It crashes, everytime.

Is there some way around this? Have I made a mistake, somewhere along the way.

Note that when I load the game, via Steam, it loads like the Grey Wolves mod, the Academy looks like Grey Wolves, and I set up the campaign properly. It just doesn't load the campaign ... it loads about 80% of it, and then crashes.

EDIT: My computer uses Windows 10. I tried compatibility mode for the game in Windows XP, and it works perfectly.

Hi guys,

Can someone tell me where I can get a digital copy of Silent Hunter III now?

Is there anything apart from Steam?

Thanks

I know that you can buy it off of Steam ... my copy of it works perfectly, with GWX. You can also buy it off of Amazon, and Ubisoft still sells it (that's strange, considering that they no longer sell SH5).

Thanks HerrRitter,

I am gonna check out all those options.

If I can run GWX on one of them NYGM should work smooth too.

Not sure about LSH or WAC

Hi guys
You can buy a second hand SH3 dvd quite cheaply on places like Ebay.
All you need to know is that you purchase a Starforce free copy.
Just email the seller and ask him what color the dvd is.
