For Professional Hockey fans, it's that time of year again. I'm talking about the NHL playoffs. Did your favorite team make it this year ? The playoffs get underway this week with 16 teams vying for the chance to hoist the Stanley cup as the best team in the NHL and a years worth of bragging rights. Last year, the Penguins won their 2nd Cup in as many years. Will the Penguins win 3 championships in a row ?

In the Eastern Conference

Metropolitan Division

Washington Capitals
Pittsburgh Penguins
Philadelphia Flyers

Atlantic Division

1. Tampa Bay Lightning
2. Boston Bruins
3. Toronto Maple Leafs

Wild card

Columbus Blue Jackets and New Jersey

In the Western Conference

Central Division

Nashville Predators
Winnipeg Jets
Minnesota Wild

Pacific Division

Vegas Golden Knights
Anaheim Ducks
San Jose Sharks

Wild Card Los Angeles Kings and the Colorado Avalanche

Hopefully, your favorite team is here. Do you have a favorite team to win it all and claim the Stanley Cup ?

The Team I follow most among the NHL-team didn't make it to the playoff.

There are still lots of good hockey to watch.

I agree. I think for the Western Conference, the Vegas Golden Knights will be hard to beat. They have been the most consistent the whole season. The knights also acquired enforcer Ryan Reeves from the Penguins in a 3 way trade that also saw Derrick Brassard go to the Penguins.

In the Eastern Conference, I will go with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins have not been the most consistent team but when everything is clicking, the Penguins are hard to stop. Having acquired Center Derick Brassard from the Ottawa Senators also fills a much needed hole as well. This may well be the Washington Capitals year though.

I think there will be a lot of great hockey games to see Markus. It will be interesting to see which 2 teams are left standing when the dust settles though.

One thing is for sure in the playoff the players will go all in.

The experience I have by watching Ice Hockey is that during the ordinary rounds the player want to win the game, but when it comes to the playoff the players really wants to win the game and therefore go all in.

The games hereafter will a lot more intense

I have had the chance to catch a few playoff Hockey games and they have all been pretty good. Playoff teams know it's time to play big or go home. As expected, the Vegas Golden Knights have had a strong showing, dispatching and sweeping the Los Angeles kings in 4 games from the playoffs. This was particularly satisfying as the Kings have been putting the Knights down.

I have also caught a few Penguin and flyers Games. The flyers have been beaten 7-0, 4-1 and 5-0 in games 1, 3 and 5, respectively. The Flyers looked lethargic in 3 of the 4 games played.

I think the Philadelphia Flyers team should go to Star Bucks coffee House and sit there and not order anything. When the police come, they can come and take them to jail for vagrancy. Maybe in jail, the Flyers can bond and get themselves together and figure out how to erase a 3-1 deficit. :haha:

*Edit* the score was 7-0, 5-1 and 5-0 in favor of the Penguins in games 1,3 and 4 respectively. The Flyers beat the Penguins 5-1 in game 2.

Go Bruins!

That said I'm paying a lot more attention to the NBA finals at the moment so hockey takes a back seat for me

Yea that series has me conflicted. Life time Leaf fan who grew up in Ontario but also like the Bruins. Adam McQuaid is from the Island and my grandson and his dad met him and got their picture taken with the cup back in 2011.

If the Leafs lose this series I'll be cheering for the Bruins to win the cup.

My boys from Minnesota got stomped bad by Winnipeg the other night. Tonight 'Torono' has a chance to extend their season by beating the Bruins. Should be a good game with a good chance of fisticuffs at the end if the Maple Leafs win. :Kaleun_Cheers:

Go Toronto!

Hey Rockstar. I guess you didn't see that there is already a thread for the 2018 NHL playoffs. It's not a big deal but guessing your thread will be merged with the existing thread or should be.

0-0 1st period is over Bruins appear to dominate the game. Besides periodically icing the puck Torono is having a hard time keeping it out of their territory (defending zone).

I completely agree. :yep: As marcel / U Crank can attest, in Canada, hockey is practically a religion. :O:

I have seen some great games lately. I also saw some ugliness yesterday when the Philadelphia Flyers were handily beaten 8-5. Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel scored 4 goals. What was ugly was that the low class Flyers fans threw garbage and full cans of beer at the Penguins players and onto the ice.

I know, when the North Stars left I was somewhat depressed, but mostly felt betrayed and downright mad. I couldn't believe it really happened took awhile for life to get back to normal.

Anyway, Torono won, so Im happy. But they really need to turn up a notch or two if they want to win at the Garden.

No doubt it is very important-for me it is.

Well the problem is I haven't got time to see one of these playoffs yet

I hope I can see some of them next week.

Another thing-the Channel where these NHL matches are broadcast, will be change to a channel who broadcast World Cup Ice hockey.

This is a change I'm going to make-I love ice hockey
And the World Cup comes first in my world.

This has been a rather rough Stanley Cup Playoff series. Hockey is inherently a rough sport but these playoffs have taken things to a new level. Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson was suspended for 3 games for an illegal check to the head of Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese in Game 3 of the teams' second-round series, the league announced Wednesday evening.

The illegal hit left Reece with a broken jaw and a concussion. Zach Aston- Reese is clearly out for the season and will undergo surgery. The hit was aimed at the head of Reece and Wilson can be clearly seen aiming his shoulder at the head of Reece and his skates leaving the ice. Wilson launched himself into Reece

The league suspended Wilson for 3 games calling him a repeat offender. Wilson also hit Penguins defense-man Brian Dumolin from behind, taking him out of the remainder of game 3.

quote:
Wilson was suspended twice for preseason infractions.
Wilson, who has been effective in the playoffs with seven points in nine games, was not made available to reporters after the game. He spoke prior to Game 3, saying (via the Washington Post (https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/capitals/for-one-fan-base-at-least-in-capitals-penguins-series-tom-wilson-is-a-big-hit/2018/05/01/ca835dd4-4d7a-11e8-84a0-458a1aa9ac0a_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.7852d50b525d)), "I've always prided myself on being an honest player."

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2018/05/02/tom-wilson-nhl-playoffs-capitals-penguins-hit/572244002/

What a joke.

quote : The NHL’s on-site supervisor, Paul Devorski, told pool reporters that the referees came together to discuss the hit and said, “You know what, we’ve got a good, clean check here”

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2018/05/02/tom-wilson-nhl-playoffs-capitals-penguins-hit/572244002/

I guess Paul doesn't understand hockey. I guess Wilson was suspended for " a good clean hit ." Wilson can be seen laughing while Reece was laying on the ice with a broken jaw, bleeding, unable to get up. I think Wilson is a goon and should have been suspended indefinitely.

Video of hit.

https://www.japersrink.com/2018/5/2/17313266/2018-stanley-cup-playoffs-tom-wilson-washington-capitals-pittsburgh-penguins-zach-aston-reese

There have been other suspensions handed down by the NHL’s director of Player Safety. The director has been forced to get involved, handing down these suspensions.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty (https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/columnist/allen/2018/04/15/nhl-playoffs-questionable-hits-suspensions/519243002/#) (on William Carrier)

Toronto Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri (on Tommy Wingels

Washington right wing Tom Wilson (on Alex Wennberg): Wilson left his feet to wallop Wennberg, and he received no hearing. But the Capitals did pay a price. The Blue Jackets scored on the power play created by Wilson’s penalty. That tied the score 2-2 and they won the game on Panarin's goal

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/columnist/allen/2018/04/15/nhl-playoffs-questionable-hits-suspensions/519243002/

These things will continue to happen if the the NHL doesn't get serious about player safety and only pays it lip service.

Platapus had mentioned the original movie Rollerball with James Caan. The hockey games I have watched look similar in a number of ways. I hope things change. I was interested in seeing some great Hockey games but now, I'm not so sure I want to watch anymore. I'm sure I can find a lot of others things to do.

^ The video is too funny . :haha: Did I violate some protocul by using the term goon ? The other term I had in mind was for mature audiences only . :03:

I wonder if the Hanson brothers are available as 2 of them were in the stands watching game 3 of the Penguins and Capitals game.

I watched the Washington Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning mix it up yesterday. The Capitals are up 2-0 over the Lightning in the series, having won yesterday, 6-2. The Capitals scored 2 goals in the closing minute of the second period. Washington is humming at this point and the momentum seems to be on their side. As I said earlier last month, this could be the Capitals year. They still have to face the Knights or Jets though.
