Trouble installing SH3 and SH4

To This Amazing Group:

Years ago I had been playing SH3, upgraded to SH4 and modded the game to no end, I loved it played it regularly and was in my own little world. Till my graphics card crapped out. Well I set things aside, finished with the last of my 4 kids and watched each go off to college.

NOW I AM BACK.... Maybe?

I updated the computer, reinstalled windows 7 and it runs nicely, installed SH3, it automatically installed Gameshadow (Which the system will not connect to as it says it cannot find the server). SH3 keeps telling me to the install was good but to finish the install I need to shut the computer down and restart. Now if I was stupid, I would just keep shutting down the system and hoping one day the installation might complete. But I am not and after 5 different restarts I realized I SH3 may be pranking me. LOL! I tried to install the updates for SH3 1.1 1.2 and 1.3, all failing then I tried the cumulative install of 1.4b. Still no success as after each patch attempt it tells me there is a dll missing. Not sure how, as it was just installed unless the dll changes when you register the game, which it will not let me get to and gameshadow is failing.

I then tried to install SH4 1.4 and 1.5 both still unsuccessful, and both saying through UBISOFT that my activation key was wrong. ITS NOT. But there was also a consideration that the servers are all off, not working, or I am really dumber that I used to be when I had all this installed and operating beautifully as I sailed past Japanese Islands in search of ships though perfectly blue waters. Anyway can someone point me towards a thread that tells me the order on install, what to do to stop gameshadow, if I even need game shadow.

I installed SH5 and it works nicely but I find it clunky and not as user friendly as SH4, not to mention I love the PACIFIC theater 7,000 times more.

Please help, at least point me in the correct direction, I have search 100 different ways to find install procedure for SH3 during current days.

What is the year on the SH3 box? If it's 2006 or later, try installing it without any updates. It may already be fully patched to 1.4, in which case trying to install any patches will result in an error message.

SH4 is the same. If it says 'U-boat Missions' on the box it's already fully patched and ready to go.

I found my original thread for installing SHIV written by AVGWarhawk but that was also while all the Gameshadow servers were up and running. I am still stuck with installing SH3 I have installed it at least 3 times but I still end up with the same result. The system telling me to shutdown to complete my installation.

I have SH3 in the box, but SHIV was a download directly from UBIsoft. They sent me 1.4 and 1.5.

When I originally installed the games and versions I had to do all the patches myself or it wouldn't work.

I am at a loss because of Gameshadow as it did alot of the patching automatically, but it does not seem to be working correctly on their end.

When I install SHIII This is what I get after. On this install I opted to cancel the game shadow install, but that didnt change anything. It still will not run and when you try to start the game again you get the same box.

Hello Mike. You never mentioned if you have a retail version of SH3 and 4 or the Steam version. Although I don't have any experience with Steam versions, our members here have reported issues with Steam. Try this.

1) completely delete SH3 and 4 from your system and I mean completely.

2) Install the game in a specific folder and DO NOT install in the default pathway. You may also elect to run the game as an administrator.

3 ) Install a fresh version of your games and determine if they have been patched, If the games are not patched, install patch version 1.4 into SH3.

4 ) I'm not sure if you are installing a super mod like GWX but if so, don't close the game but rather install all of those files in the same specific folder as well while the game is still open.

5) You can then close out the game. Agree to install game shadow and another screen will come up and at that point, decline not to install game shadow as Catfish has said and close out the game.

* Subsim founder Neal Stevens made available modifications to allow the simulations to be played without the DVD in the computer as well. The modifications should be in the archives. Sailor Steve and Catfish both had good advice as well.

Once the games are up and running, you can install any additional mods through the JSGME mod enabler interface.

I am having a difficult time in that it keeps wanting to install Gameshadow I have to cancel it to stop it. Not sure if that hurts the load? As it does not give me options to choose anything but codecs, Main game, and adobe. My SH3 is Retail purchased in 2005 so I need to install patches, but the SH4 is downloaded and I have both 1.4 and 1.5. I also tried to create my own folder in the Program files but Windows 7 would not allow me to create a folder and SH3 wouldnt Recognize the folder created by me (again in the program files section) It wants to install the game to C:/program files/UBISoft/Silent Hunter 3?

I tried C:/program files/Silent Hunter but it refused to work with me. I will try again.

Mike, because of the file protection Windows built into Win7 and newer operating systems, you need to not install in either C:/Program Files or C:/Program Files x86. What I have done in the past is make an empty folder on drive C and label it Ubisoft. I then directed the installer to that folder. The Windows file protection messes up any patching or modding of the games.

5) You can then close out the game. Agree to install game shadow and another screen will come up and at that point, decline not to install game shadow as Catfish has said and close out the game.

Again, choose to install game shadow and when it moves to the apply window for game shadow, select cancel / finish without installing game shadow.

If the folders are not being recognized, choose an existing folder like pictures for example and install the game files there. Just make sure you move your pictures or whatever is in them to another folder you make like pictures 2 for example. You can follow what HW3 said as well as it's good advice.

You can uninstall GameShadow from the SH4 install through Add Remove Programs in Windows 7 before it tries to update drivers etc. Be sure to install DirectX 9 from the SH4 install procedure.

I bought my digital download of SH4 in 2007 and the 1.5 U-Boat add-on in 2008 from a link on the Ubisoft site through Direct2Drive. My computer died so I got a new computer and reinstalled SH4 in 2008 but got the same message as you got. I emailed Ubisoft Help and they 'flipped a switch' at Ubisoft to re-activate my Activation code and SH4 activated. I thought they would give me a different key, that's why I said they flipped a switch. It was the same key.

Ubisoft Help was very helpful at the time. Then I downloaded and installed the 1.5 U-Boat add-on that had just been released which installed like normal.

Since then Direct2Drive went out of business. A year or more ago I looked on the Ubisoft site and a digital download of SH4 was available for download so I think you might be able to email Ubisoft help to get your codes re-activated.

I did buy SH4 Gold, U-Boat missions when Direct2Drive went out of business in case I needed it for another new computer someday but haven't needed to use it, and you might need to do the same if Ubisoft Help isn't helpful in flipping the re-activation code switch.

I'm not a Steam enthusiast and recommend the SH4 Gold, U-Boat missions DVD. Then you have the complete install.

For the moment I will focus on SHIII.

I uninstalled SHIII, Cleaned the registry, and all files associated with SHIII or IV, I then created a file,

C://Ubisoft2/SilentHunterIII

This is where I installed the game.

The game installed fine, I cancelled GameShadow as suggested, and it SHIII finished perfectly (As it always has). It offered to allow me to, 1 register, 2 wait 7 days to register, or 3 Never register. I attempted all three. (this was after it approved the system that I was running as I met all the criteria for smooth operation). There was an error every time at UBISofts end.

I then attempted to update the game prior to running it using SHIII updates 1.4b with NO Success, 1.1 with no success, 1.2 with no success, and 1.3 with no success each time saying that there was a missing DLL.

Without adding SHIII I cannot add SHIV.

I have tried installing now at least 15 times and its always the same outcome, Unable to register, Unable to enter Key code, Unable to start game, unable to install updates, unable to play.

This game it the stock out of the box game from 1 year before patches started being available.

SHIV is the online download and I still have that on a jump drive and DVD ready to install. It just will not work because SHIII Wont install, allow me to enter the key, and wont allow me to, update, or start the game.

Just a little frustrated.

MY SH5 is updated, modded, and plays great but SHIV is where I want to be as SH5 is like driving on a flat tire. CLUNKY. I used to have a mod that allowed me to operate SH5 like SHIV. I like the Pacific Theater, and the crystal blue ocean and beaches, The Cold Atlantic is miserable. LOL.

You are submitting a case in customer support right? This is your best bet in my opinion, tell them you have the 3 activation keys for the 3 games, but Install won't let you activate, so can they reset the keys so you can activate, or give you keys that will work.

Ask them that. Someone should get back to you and tell you what to do. Give them some time to get all their marbles in one sock. Patience.....

Don't post your keys in their forum or other people might see them.

Your picture is shiowing Starforce protection.
You need to remove it from your installation.

Note also depending on your geographical position there are 2 updates for patches US and EMEA.
It is important that the patch matches the dvd version.
You cannot have a US dvd with a EMEA patch.

Europe, the Middle East and Africa, eh? I don't think an EMEA DVD is compatible in Ohio - if that's where you are.

I'm not in the Yellow Sea in real life, it is one of my favorite patrol areas in SH1, the original Silent Hunter.

If you're really in the US, some retailers sell the US DVD's of SH3, SH4 Gold, & SH5 bundled together pretty cheap. Amazon comes to mind.

No wonder you're having problems. Because of the DMCA I don't think I can watch an EMEA DVD movie here in the US on my player. Because I don't know much about these regions and the DMCA I did some quick digging and I thought this was interesting:

you do not "purchase" a movie anymore. You "license" it and there should be a copy of this somewhere on the jacket of the DVD. It's just like software. You think you go to the store and "buy" software, but you are actually licensing it.

If you Google the internet there are some very good prices out there.
There is a Canadian Encore version that comes with SHII and III.
If you are buying second hand then ask the seller what the dvd disc color is.
The Starforce free dvd' is split in half with 2 colors.
White top half and black bottom half.

I purchased Silent Hunter 3 in 2011, played it all of these years with no problem, (now both of my DVD Drives stopped being recognized over time), if this is true that explains why the DVD drives worked to reload Windows onto a blank Harddrive perfectly but it would not read my SH3 Game disk??? I am understanding that is because of StarForce and UBIsofts Decision to use StarForce??? WOW. So what do I do now? I have a original copy of Silent Hunter III that I purchased from Microcenter that will not run because UBI soft put a program on my disk to stop anyone from copying it?, Its never been copied. I will ask UBI as I have a help request into them.

I have tried the removal tool, It removed it. Also found it in my list of hidden devices, removed it from there too, but my game will still not run and Starforce still activates.

I bought this game before I built my first real computer. The DELL we had wouldn't even run the game, LOL. When we bought the first DELL the salesman said that 4 gig of harddrive space will be more than enough for years to come. LOL.

The Key was STARFORCE! I removed it (what a crappy security program). I followed the directions and updated with the RAR program, and the game suddenly worked.

Ok now that I know this much I realized I am running on the 32 bit system and could have updated to the 64 bit system thus allow use of more of my 8 gig of RAM. UGH.

Well not I am interested in loading the Frontend but I am guessing I should have done that before I did everything I have done so far CORRECT or can Install now.

YEAHHHHHHH I have SH 3 loaded if not correctly it is loaded. LOL.

"Starforce" has been a major pain in the arse for so long, preventing people from playing games they bought in good faith, but I never removed it for fear of affecting other important games from working afterwards; games that wouldn't work were usually unimportant ones, except in the case of Stalker: Clear Sky... but this employed the "Tages" anti-emulation software, not Starforce, and I got the disc key redeemed by GOG.com so I could download a free 'clean' copy from them. I'm playing it right now.

All you need to do is make copies of your original clean installation and give them different names.
When you want to add a new game use the application Multi SH3 and give each game its own 3 digit saved game folder.

I spent most of the day yesterday completely reloading the whole computer, added a newer hard drive, updated the Bios to the newest NVIDIA for the Motherboard, reinstalled Windows 7 64 bit as the Operating system. (WHY WINDOWS 7 (well, I cannot get my Photoshop CS3 program to work on Windows 10?) why I am not sure.

Everything is updated, its a beautiful install and runs as smoothly as a BRAND SPANKING NEW COMPUTER. Now I am ready to install the GAME SHIII.

Should I install the clean game first or the S3F first?

When I make a copy of the game is it simply a copy and past?

I made separate files for each possible game, and I will install and update each there, linking to S3F Correct? C:\\UBISOFT\

Trying to avoid pitfalls and if I understand correctly

1)CLEAN INSTALL of SHIII FIRST, get rid of the StarForce unapproved additions, and replace dll's eliminating the scourge.
2)Save install by Copy and paste to a Master save file on multiple drives (LOL)
3)Update install to 1.4b (Because I have to update) I have the first version.
4)Install S3F NOW? or before steps 1,2 and 3?
5)Do I Install JGSME into each now or thats handled by S3F?
6)Start S3F and identify each load of SHIII and SHIV? my goal is to get to SHIV and if J3F doesnt work, I may just bypass that step, saving the clean install for a later date.

S3F may include a copy of Multi-SH3, but Multi-SH3 is the program that lets you run multiple installations of the game (hence the name).

I am trying to avoid the pitfalls an rashly installing only to find out it should have been done differently.

What I have:
A Newly installed Win 7 64 bit computer (why Win7 Because my CS3 won't work on 10 for some reason)

All updated and running smoothly

Defragged and ready for installs

Installed SH3 into file of my choice. E:\\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIIIA then patched to 1.4b and StarForce verified NOT On the system.
Tested game and SH3 running smoothly from original installed folder after patch and copies were made.

Before I ran for the first time I copied and pasted into new file E:\\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII1.4b
Also Copied and pasted into Backup file
E:\\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIIIB and E:\\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIIIC as backups

I also have other waiting files for additional copies allowing for supermods using Multi SH3 or S3F???????

EX.
E:\\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIIIGWX
\SilentHunterIIIFleetboat
etc etc

Also created extra folders named and saved as

E:\\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIVA and B

Then installed SH4 to file labeled E:\\WolvesofthepacificNEW
with the good install.

The Created a back up copy to where I patched SH4
E:\WolvesofthepacificPATCHED

Copied that file again to

E:\\wolvesofthepacificCOMPLETE

SH4 then was tested and ran smoothly.

Still not JGSME or Multi 3 or 4 installed yet.


NOW my question is.......
1) DO I put a copy of JGSME in every copy of the game?
And
2) Where do I install Multi SH3 and Multi SH4? Anywhere special? In a main folder or outside the main game folder as stand alone?

3) Should I use S3F to handle all of SH3 or just use Multi-SH3?

The videos are only about 10 minutes long. Recommend you watch them! The principle is the same for SH3 though I'm not a SH3 guy.

2. Multi SH3 in every SH3 install, Multi SH4 in every SH4 install. Read the documentation BUT FIRST, please, please, WATCH THE VIDEOS in order: (1, then 2, then 3) so you understand the CONCEPTS. That's why he made them.
3. I don't know about #3..... Someone else will answer that.

Listen I AM NO EXPERT and I am re learning how to do this as I have not played this game, modded or installed since 2007. My kids were involved in sports and I had no time to play with games. But now as an empty nester I can waste nearly as much time as I want, enjoying the South sea watching a sunset from the conning tower of a the USS Picuda SS382 (sister boat to the SS383 Papanito)- The Picuda was kept in the Atlantic likely based out of Key West when the photo attached was taken.

You need to install the Large Address Aware (LAA) application for SH4.
Where as you use the 4gb patch for SH3, SH4 uses LAA which will use some of your existing ram to the game.

The install procedure for SH4 is basically the same as SH3 with starting the stock game to the Naval Academy to build your save game folder IIRC.
SH3-4-5 are all totally independent of each other.

It would also be easier for us if you kept SH3 and 4 each to their own posts when discussing.

Gottcha, makes sense. I will add it following the directions. There is alot of issue with 32 and 64 bit Windows programs and their patches, I did not want to make a mistake.

I thought that the SHIV was an ADDON to SHIII all these years. LOL.

I have the regular un-modded game installed and it runs fine. I have also added the 32 bit fix as suggested and selected the exe file and it is listed as true. Ran the game with only the Fleetboat 2.0 loaded using JGSME. and it stops at the load screen where it shows the fleetboat, with the red/maroon load bar. Its is completely loaded but will go no further. Any suggestions?

For SH4 you didn't need to install patch v1.1, v1.2, or v1.3. Once SH4 v1.0 installed, after a reboot you could have gone directly to patch v1.4, then rebooted again, and installed the v1.5 U-Boat addon.

After installing a large piece of software like SH4 I like to reboot to clear the memory of bits & pieces that may linger around before adding large patches like v1.4, and then the v1.5 U-Boat addon which is also very large, however you said SH4 started fine.

I would have rebooted before installing RFB; Real Fleet Boat 2.0
Your "fleetboat" is RFB, right? or is it a different mod?

There are 2 RFB versions/patches - one has the RFB mod with the patch included in the RFB install uploaded by Rockin Robbins, and this first one uploaded by LukeFF that goes on top of a regular Real Fleet Boat 2.0 install:

Maybe you got the version of RFB with the patch included:

If Real Fleet Boat won't load maybe LAA isn't set right or you used the wrong patch.

Rockin Robbins explained how to set up multiple installs of SH4 with LAA in those three videos. The procedure is the same even if he was using Linux instead of Win 7.

AAnker and the Berbster, You guys are right to ask me all of those things, but

I did do the reboots, and the patches,-straight to 1.4. and tried it all, rollback, Fleetboat 2.0, TMO, The Berbsters beginner mod, my old mods, Fleetboat 1.4 and on and on. Added the Multi SH4, Added LAA, Added JGSME, Created a file for each version with an original copy in each. Every original copy works, starts fine and runs. Then I add the mod using JGSME, and it starts, runs through the start up screen and stops before the main game choice screen (now it goes to the main game choice screen as long as JGSME being used for mods), Tried the rollback, tried the compatability fixes, etc etc. Realized I had not installed 1.5 but now 1.5 wont install correctly because of all the other stuff in the mix. 10 years ago when I was playing this and modding this regularly, I knew all of this stuff, some of it has changed some has not. SO I DELETED THE WHOLE KIT AND KIBOODLE. Starting over. and will follow planned install. Also, I thought all of these years SHIV was an Add on to SHIII. SO that was news to me. LOL. I am just re installing everything hopefully correctly. LOL I will let you know the results. Starting the process NOW!!!!!!!!.

SHIV Install (if I did it correctly).

1) Defragged the Computer.

2) Did a registry clean using CCCLeaner.

3) Restarted the system.

4) Installed SHIV.

5) Restarted the system.

6) Ran the 1.4 patch (good install NO ERRORS).

7) Restarted the system.

8) Created 5 Files:

E:\\UBISoft\WolvesofThePacific
\WolvesofThePacific1.4 Beginner
\WolvesofThePacific1.4 TMO
\WolvesofThePacific1.4 RSRDM
\WolvesofThePacific 1.4 PATCHED
\WolvesofThePacific1.4 PATCHED DNC

Each file got their own perfect copy of Patched 1.4 from the original copy.
Each file then received their own JGSME (ran a snapshot from task list).
Each file then received their own Multi-SHIV(changed the names to the 3 letter name).
Each file then received their own Large Address file. (Updated the exe file).

9) Restarted the system.

10) ran the 1.5 patch (error on the install but it said rerun, I did and there were no errors).

11) Restarted the system.

12) Ran the game and it ran fine (NOTE: Still have not added any MODS).

12) Created 5 More files:

E:\\UBISoft\WolvesofThePacific (original patched 1.5)
\WolvesofThePacific1.5 Beginner
\WolvesofThePacific1.5 TMO
\WolvesofThePacific1.5 RSRDM

I am now looking for the best camera that can fly around like the one on SHIII allowing me to submerge, keep an eye on where I am located (the little orange cross on top of the water) or not. But most of the fly around cameras are slooooooooowwwwwwww and don't separate like SHIIIs camera where you can fly ahead and watch the boat sail by easily.

Running Fleetboat 2.5 for the moment, With some other simple additions. But I really need a good camera. I will not put it past me that I am doing something WRONG with the camera. I am using the arrow keys, but nothing makes them work better.

Good, you're up and running. I'm going to say that there are several good Camera mods, each are unique (like different flavors), but they may not be compatible with the mega mod you are using.

The Cameras.dat file controls so many factors in various views. Most are compatible with the Stock un-modded game only, and some of them have been adapted to work with specific mega-mods.

Sometimes there is a modifier key combination that will get the camera to move fast, like in Stock. Usually there is a Support folder with documentation about the mod that may list the key combinations to make the camera move fast. Try the Stock key combination first if they don't.

You're going to have to Search in the Downloads to find one compatible with the specific mod you are using.

The mod maker designed their mod to be used the way they thought best. Why not experience the mod the way it was made? Read the documentation, 100's if not 1,000's of hours, even years went into creating mods like the mods you have selected.

I recommend you try it their way first, you will get familiar with it. You worked so hard to set up your installs. Swapping out Cameras.dat will change the whole mod and how and what you see in many different stations.

I installed a third type of sh3 specificly for WAC 5.0 black sea campaing(beta tetsting) and after I installed mods all my saves and campaing couldint star just CTD then black screen Initialising. any ideas I had diffrent save game location for the normal wac 5

SH3 needs the 4gb patch in each installation, did your remember to install it?
Did you run Windows 10 in compatibility mode for Windows 7 and run your applications as administrators?
Another option is tick DPI High scaling in compatibility.
CTD is usually a compatibility issue when loading the game.
Black screen is usually a driver issue, gpu scaling, asprct ratio setting.

I didn't add the 1.5 patch for SHIV and I got a no load on the screen. I upgraded from 1.4 to 1.5 which made it so all of the mods I was adding that only works in 1.5 actually worked. ( I added the LAA File The Berbster is telling you about too).

Tried to install 1.4 patch from CD Mediterranean expansion pack. Mess come up files missing. Tried again but installed expansion disc 1St then do patch got same mess up but diff files missing.. Tried again without doing patch game crashed half way through loading wanting to send a report. Looked in report says knell files list like when on???
