I use the sound powered phone growler as my text message notification. I get some weird looks. :03:

Cool stuff! Of course back in 1970 we had it, and I'm not surprised to see it still in use. The only time I recall hearing was preceding a 'General Quarters' call, so by the time the bosun's mate was making the announcement we were already on our way to our duty stations.

I still have mine and the lanyard I made when I got my crow 36 years ago. All the beeswax is missing, needs a good tune-up.

A dearly departed friend of mine was a Petty Officer in the Royal Navy and whilst on shore leave and having a drink with his mates he often had this irritating habit of blowing said instrument in public, often to the annoyance of everyone.

One evening in a certain drinking establishment I went to the mens toilet, heard the shrill and upon returning I saw my friend had a bloody nose and a male stranger was lying semi conscious on the floor.

Other friends in our party explained what had happened and needless to say, said pipe was never seen again whilst he was on shore leave.
