David Ogden Stiers Passed away after a courageous battle with bladder cancer.

David rose to prominence and fame playing Doctor / Surgeon Major Charles Emerson Winchester III in the acclaimed series, M*A*S*H. While joining the other actors in the sixth season, David became an integral part in the continued success of the series. Stiers also received two Emmy nominations for his work on "M.A.S.H." David starred on the show from 1977 until its landmark final episode in 1983, seen by 106 million people.

In the series, David's character loved classical music, using it as a buffer against the carnage he witnessed from a front row seat as he portrayed a surgeon. David Introduced these and other attributes from his real life persona as in real life, he was also a classical music aficionado.

David also played the French horn and Piano.

Quote : Music[edit]

Alan Alda pays tribute to David Ogden Stires on Twitter.

David Ogden Stiers. I remember how you skateboarded to work every day down busy LA streets. How, once you glided into Stage 9, you were Winchester to your core. How gentle you were, how kind, except when devising the most vicious practical jokes. We love you, David. Goodbye.

Sad to hear. He was a nice change from Frank Burns. Some great moments by a talented actor. Here's my favorite:

I was a little too young for Frank Burns and Trapper John and Henry Blake.

MASH to me was always Hawkeye, BJ Hunnicutt, and Charles Emerson Winchester III sharing a tent.

David Ogden Stiers, you will be missed

This by far was my favorite scene with Charles Emerson Winchester ( David Ogden Stiers ) David used his real life love of classical music in this scene.

Nicely done. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

And I was a tad too old. I loved the book, and I loved the movie, but the series never quite clicked with me. That said, I did watch a few episodes over the years and appreciated the talent of the people involved. That, and I saw David Ogden Stiers in a few other things. He was great.

Stiers was a very skilled actor and brought a nuance to the character of Maj. Winchester very few other actors could have achieved. Where Maj. Burns was a pretty narrow character with virtually no humane aspects, Winchester, even as he suffered through his 'exile', retained a sense of humanity and moral compass belied by his snobbish exterior. It takes a very talented actor to pull off such a range without it appearing cartoonish or cloying. Throughout his stint on MASH, Stiers had several moments where he was able to show the human side of Winchester:

In Stiers' other roles in TV and film, he always gave performances that gave depth to his characterizations...

RIP, Mr. Stiers...

MASH is one of my al time favorite.

I do not really have a favorite

The only one I can think of is the first couple of episode Charles Emerson Winchester was in.

I think it's about time to a re-watch the movie and the series.

I have the movie and the entire series on DVD
