I loved how someone had written "WHAT?" across the Balkans :har:

Poll: 73 Percent Of Americans Unable To Locate America On Map Of America

Washington, D.C. – According to a Gallup/Harris poll released Monday, a full 73 percent of American citizens are incapable of identifying their home country on a map of the United States.

Of the 1,400 residents surveyed, the most common incorrect responses placed the more than 230-year-old territory in the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans (11 percent), the space where Mexico would appear were it in fact included on the map (10 percent), and inside the word “America” written just above the northernmost states (six percent).

I hear that a lot of American high school students can't point our Italy on a map either

As a Norwegian, I certainly won't gloat after being lectured by a 7-9 year old Tamil kid on Scandinavian history. Only politicians can say without bursting out laughing that education is best in the west. Seems to me education almost all over is a satire on education.

My wife and I tried labeling the two blank maps. I got 35 States correct, my wife got 36.

Our maps of Europe are hilariously wrong. :har:

Frankly, does it even matter?
Why would I know where the states in the US are? Why is that important to me? Why would an American need to know all European countries? Does any of you know where all African or Asian countries are (I certainly don't)? I think it's important to have a general idea of where things are but that's it. If I know that Albania is in the Balkans that's good enough for me because I know it's general direction. When someone asks for Oklahoma...well then I know it's part of the US but where exactly in it I don't know (well I could find it as I know by chance that it's shaped like a frying pan...but that's cheating:D).

If someone knows that Germany is in central Europe that's good enough for me.

I know where the well known ones are like NY and California and some lesser ones and that would go for the world as a whole. Hey there are places in the UK I never knew about. I don't see it being that important in fact I would say knowing the colours to wire a plug are far more important.

Absolutely. I get totally fed up with quizzes where the questions suddenly involve US states or capitols of same - why? Nobody asks about, say, Scottish Regions or Pacific Island states. Grrr. Also, I always think that 'look, those statesiders are so stupid because...' (add as applicable) most unpleasant.
(FX: old man gets grumpy).

Also, I suspect that like a lot of the European answers, there is a lot of deliberate humour happening with the labelling.

Although I was pissed off with the number of people who labelled all of the UK / GB as 'England'.

I got most of the European countries right but I got hazy in the Balkans and Baltic States.

True, but then there is that brexit joke.
An Englishman, an Irishman and a Scotsman walk into a bar. The Englishman wants to leave, so they all have to.
Which pretty much sums up where the real power still lies, in the 'UK'. :O:

On topic: i pretty much mess up the US map myself, but at least i get most right... looking for Macau, Montenegro and such places is always a challenge ;)

That's because Macau is not in the US but Canada...

Sometimes I'm embarrassed by my fellow Germans.:nope:

Is the GB still GB without Wales and Scotland? The map I saw shows the borders.

A story from somewhere in the 80's

The Swedish King and the Queen was visiting USA during a Swedish Campaign in the States.

During this visit a Swedish journalist made some daily report.

One day he visit a pub(which was in the basement(like in Cheers))

He asked the people there what they knew about Sweden and where it was on the map.

Can't remember everything being said in this interview I do remember this guy sitting at the bar.

Everyone knows Sweden is an island north of Japan

I was like WHAT !? how can a person be so ignorant, having so little clue about countries. It also made me laugh a lot.

Later I told this to a friend and started to laugh.

He looked at me, why do you laugh ?
Can you place every state in USA ?
Can you place every countries in Soviet ?

I said no to all his questions

Well, he said, this guy at this pub, is maybe bad at geography.
He could be a skilled electrician, plumber, or a lawyer.

From that day on I have never laugh at people when they, like these people in the article, failed to do something right.

Very wise of you. Besides these kinds of stories always cherry pick the most ridiculous examples. 90 people out of 100 could get it right and they'll only show the 10 that messed it up.
