You laugh, but there are actual competitions. And not risque ones. Imagine the gymanstics high bar (?) routine, but vertical. Those girls are impressive.

I was at a ummmm..... faciility one night, nice big place. Two poles on the main stage, from the stage to the three story ceiling, about 30 yds apart. This one girl spun her way up the pole, showing very little effort, hooked her feet in the rafters, and proceeded to do inverted cartwheels across the rafters over to the other pole. Then spun her way down, gaining speed the whole way, like a figure skater. Soft gentle delicate landing on the ground, the easily meshed into another routine. She got a standing ovation from the fairly large crowd.
