Hello, I just got the Gato class in SH4 and right now I'm patrolling with it and when I went to external to see it, it looks just like the previous class, the Gar class. But when I go to museum, all of them look like the Balao, Gato. I don't know what to do! Any help?

They are basically the same submarines, from the Gar through the end of the war. You will see conning tower changes, but even the Porpoise gets the new stuff there... The main differences are the diving depths and speed.

Oh, I didn't know that... Sorry for asking. Is there a specific date for when the conning tower changes? I was just expecting it to have the signature conning tower while the others just have the same old one.

Are you playing the Stock version of the game, or do you have a mod or two activated? Most of the dates for equipment changes on the subs are controlled by the subs' UPC file. As an example, in your game folder, go through Data \ Submarine \ NSS_Gato \ NSS_Gato.upc, and open it with a text editor. The other subs have their own folders. Be careful though, not to change anything, else you might "bomb" your boats digitally... The Gar in most mods uses the Gato's 3D files.

As an example of what mods do, in FotRSU, the Gar boat starts with a "standard" conn. Then gets a "MedWar" version May of 1942, a "LateWar" version in January 1943, and if you're still alive and still on the same boat, it gets the "Elite" version January of 1944. In Stock, you start with a "StockEarlyWar" version, go to the "MedWar" version January 1942, and a "LateWar" version January 1943. There is no "Elite" in Stock. Also, in stock, some of the dates overlap, and that can cause some issues as to when the game finally gives you a change. Along those lines, where you are and what you're doing will influence changes to your boat's equipment. You might be eligible for the conn on January 1, 1943, but you're on patrol, or you're based at Fremantle, the furthest away from the parts -and- there aren't enough to go around... sigh... :wah: - btw, never worry about asking questions. There is no "sorry" about it, unless you don't ask, and then you'll never know!... :salute:

I'm playing Stock, I wanna try to at least finish this game in stock before moving on to any mods. Last time I tried to mod my SH3 to Living Silent Hunter, I broke the game. So I don't trust myself to mod anything.

The important things about mods PotroastXII, is 1. Don't have SH4 (or 3 or 5) installed in "C:\Program Files" and 2. The folder structure of the mod prior to activation. When you want to try a mod, give a shout. In the meantime, read around on the site, especially the stickies like THEBERBSTER's collection SH4<>Tutorials<>... One of the interesting things I found was the size of the basic hull for all fleet boats. Porpoise was a 16 foot diameter cylinder 250 feet long, Gato had the same 16 foot diameter 250 foot long cylinder, only difference being the length of the torpedo rooms at the ends of the cylinder. Balao had slightly thicker steel, but the dimensions of the cylinder remained the same.
