While looking to see if the Trans Siberean Orchestra would be playing anywhere near me during the holiday season, I discovered TSO founder Paul O'Neil had passed away in April of this year. I don't remember seeing anything of his passing in the forum's or I certainly would have remembered. TSO is a holiday favorite of many but have done other productions as well. TSO is unique in so many ways, none greater than their embrace and marriage of classical music with progressive harder rock guitar work and arrangements and compositions.

Quote: Paul O’Neill, the founder of Trans-Siberian Orchestra (http://www.trans-siberian.com/), a progressive metal band known for spectacular holiday concerts filled with theatrics, lasers and pyrotechnics, was found dead in his hotel room in Tampa, Fla., on Wednesday. He was 61. [In a report released on May 30, the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner in Tampa concluded that Mr. O’Neill had died of an accidental drug overdose. Premethadone, codeine, diazepam and an antihistamine were found in his system, the report said.]

Mr. O’Neill began his music career as a manager, concert promoter and record producer before forming Trans-Siberian Orchestra with members of the Florida band Savatage in 1996. The band’s first album, “Christmas Eve and Other Stories,” has sold more than three million copies.

Sadly, TSO bassist David Zablidowsky was killed in an auto related accident.

Quote: The musician and several other passengers had been sitting in the band’s RV, which had pulled over to fix a flat tire, when a tractor-trailer lost control on Interstate 75 and veered into them. The driver of a 2003 GMC Sierra also collided with them. At the time of the accident, the band had been traveling from Biloxi, Mississippi, to St. Petersburg, Florida for a Friday show.

There is no better description of TSO than to say the production is what would happen if the Who meets ‘Phantom of the Opera’ with Pink Floyd’s light show,’. If you never saw or heard TSO in concert or saw video's of their playing, give your ears a treat.

Rest in Peace Paul.

Nice post.

I've seen them maybe 8-10 times, paid for twice, the rest was on the clock as a medic, but I enjoyed every one of the shows. Own a few of their albums.
