View Full Version : Zimbabwe's army seizes power, targets 'criminals' around Mugabe

HARARE (Reuters) - Zimbabwe’s military seized power early on Wednesday saying it was targeting “criminals” around President Robert Mugabe, the only ruler the country has known in its 37 years of independence.
Soldiers seized the state broadcaster. Armored vehicles blocked roads to the main government offices, parliament and the courts in central Harare, while taxis ferried commuters to work nearby. The atmosphere in the capital remained calm.

The military said Mugabe and his family were safe. Mugabe himself spoke by telephone to the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma, and told him he was confined to his home but fine, the South African presidency said in a statement[

It's mot a military coup it's a government coup ... President for life Mugabe sacked his vice president not for life Mnangagwa and started all of this:

http://www.cnn.com/2017/11/14/africa/zimbabwe-military-chief-treasonable-conduct/index.html

The developments came after weeks of political turmoil, in which Mugabe sacked his powerful Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who enjoyed wide support in the military and was tipped to become the next leader. The move fueled speculation Mugabe would try to install his wife, Grace, to succeed him.
The first signs that a military intervention was underway came Tuesday afternoon as tanks were seen near the capital.
The situation escalated with the early morning announcement, when Maj. Gen. S.B. Moyo addressed the country on state TV, vehemently denying the operation was a coup.
"To both our people and the world beyond our borders, we wish to make it abundantly clear that this is not a military takeover of government," he said.

Too early to say.

Mr Mugabe's appearance at the graduation ceremony made it look like business as usual but it's not. This has simply added to the confusion about his future.
The military has essentially been in control for three days and, with the help of South African envoys, has been in talks with Mr Mugabe.
This cunning and experienced leader has resisted the push to go immediately but he is facing unprecedented pressure to step down after nearly four decades in power.

Emmerson Mnangagwa

He is widely believed to have orchestrated the Gukurahundi massacre where the Zimbabwean Fifth Brigade massacred rebels many from the ethnic Ndebele tribe in Matabeleland during the 1980s.

Estimates for the total deaths vary but it is believed to be anywhere between 4,000 and 20,000. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/africa/emmerson-mnangagwa-zanu-pf-politician-favourite-take-over-robert-mugabe-zimbabwe-military-coup-a8061101.html

The Archbishop of York has put on a dog collar for the first time in almost 10 years, ending his symbolic protest over Robert Mugabe's leadership of Zimbabwe.
In December 2007, Dr John Sentamu cut up his dog collar live on BBC One's Andrew Marr Show, promising not to wear one until Mr Mugabe left office.
He said Zimbabwe's leader had "taken people's identity" and "cut it to pieces", prompting him to do the same.
On Sunday, he returned to the Marr Show and reinstated his collar as promised.

Nothing will change. I'm hardly encouraged by events. the new leader, Emmerson Mnangagwahttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/3/37/Emmerson_Mnangagwa_2017.png/220px-Emmerson_Mnangagwa_2017.png (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Emmerson_Mnangagwa_2017.png) is nicknamed 'the Crocodile' for good reason. His massacre of 20,000 Metabele tribesmen has gone unpunished. Operation Gukurahundi was the political ideology he initiated. In 1983, Mnangagwa delivered speeches attacking the opposition, describing those who opposed the government as "cockroaches (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cockroach)" whose villages should be burned. In a second speech, he said that (a self confessed political murderer??!): "Blessed are they who follow the path of the government laws, for their days on earth shall be increased. But woe unto those who will choose the path of collaboration with dissidents, for we will certainly shorten their stay on earth.
The conflict ended in 1987 with the surrender of ZAPU. Despite the Unity Accord which ended the conflict and merged Mugabe's ZANU and Nkomo's ZAPU parties to formZANU–PF (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZANU%E2%80%93PF), Mnangagwa is still disliked in Matabeleland because of his role in the conflict..
