The “discount provided by Amazon” applies to products including board games and technological gadgets offered by other merchants as the holiday season approaches. The retailer has been trying to compete aggressively on some items to win sales and draw customers away from low-priced rivals like Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N).

The move allows Amazon to sell the products at lower prices while still giving full price to the sellers.

“When Amazon provides a discount, customers get the products they want at a price they’ll love, and small businesses receive increased sales at their listed asking price,” an Amazon spokeswoman said in an emailed statement, noting that businesses can opt out at any time.

He who controls the market controls the price and the buyer knows that. No competition the consumer must pay what they charge.

I wonder at what point Amazon becomes a candidate for antitrust action?

Helping a business party to establish a monopole, is no good deal for anyone but the monopolist. Whom do you think they will turn against once they managed to wipe out their big company rivals? Right, small company rivals. After these - go figure. The amazon boss hasclearly described he wnats a future when people turn to Amazon for just any need they have and he wants them to buy all and everything from amazon. Without exception. It sounds almost a bit psychotic.

Its the reason why I have started to NOT buy certain product categories at Amazon anymore, that are outside their traditional envelope.

Its also the reason why I have not bought a Kindle, but a Tolino e-reader. Better conditions, comparable quality, no chaining to the Amazon store. I read last year Germany is the only country where the biggest market share for e-readers is not in Amazon's hands, but the Tolino consortium's. Good so! And you do not even have to sacrifice anything when chosing this over that.

Monopolism is the market's death.
