I'm not one for making mods myself...I'm not the most computer literate person in the world...or in the house.

BUT...that being said, I'd like to know if anyone is experienced with making sound file mods on SH4.

I'm a member of a WW2 USN Living History Crew aboard the U.S.S. Batfish. During the last event, our on-watch crew made a recording of a routine dive per the manuals. I'd like to take the klaxton sound that is played when you dive and modify it with this sound file. Oddly enough, time wise, it jives completely with the game although that was never the intent.

I think it may be too long because when I simply rename it and place it in the file it doesn't play in the game. Same type of file so that's not it.

Any ideas?

Are you talking about the "Submarine_DiveAlarm_INT.wav" file? In "Stock" game, the file is 2 seconds long. It's "mono" (one channel) at 22.05kHz frequency. In Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate, it is now 17 seconds long, "stereo" (two-channel) at 44.1kHz "CD Quality" frequency - basically the same frequency, just two channels... You don't want the file to be much longer than that, time-wise, figuring that 18 seconds is about the limit... Files often don't play if the frequency of the file doesn't "match" what the computer (Windows) is set to, unless the game's "player" does sample rate conversion on-the-fly for you... If you need an editor to change things, check-out Audacity (http://www.audacityteam.org/home/). If you've got something like Sony Sound Forge or similar, all the better...

That has to be the problem. The length of the new file is 3:21. These are done aboard the boat and in real time so I hope there's a way to modify these to work. As the crew goes through the evolutions of drill, the recordings are amazing and make for good sound files...albeit long.

The length might be the issue for it to play, but make sure the sample rate (ie: 44.1kHz if "stereo") and the bit depth (16 bit) match the game file.
