View Full Version : US to pull staff from Cuba over 'attacks'
Breaking news
The US is to pull most of its staff from its embassy in Cuba after they suffered "sonic attacks", American media report.
The US is withdrawing about 60% of its embassy staff in response to attacks on diplomats, senior unnamed officials were quoted as saying.
It is also warning Americans not to visit the country because some attacks occurred in hotels, the sources say.
More than 20 diplomatic staff have reported health problems.

From what I've reading and hearing about the matter, even the Cuban government is puzzled. There has been some speculation either China or Russia may be behind the mystery, trying to gain intel in a place they perceive as more vulnerable than other sites; one radio report even posited some Jihad faction was either trying to get intel or was attempting some kind of tech attack against the US in Cuba as sort of a retaliation for their brethren being held in Gitmo...
<O>
Must admit it is very strange this. :hmmm:

Very strange indeed ... if it is a foreign power why hasn't this been reported before and if it is a foreign power why wouldn't Cuba know about it?
The pictures show the embassy in a wide open environment ... could it be the food or drink served only to the embassy staff?
Sushi anyone?

Or Trump needs a pretext for a different foreign policy agenda towards Cuba, that suits him better. Didn't he say so some months ago :hmmm:
Could even be the DPRK, or perhaps someone who spent some time at Gitmo and wants to return the favour to Americans.
Devious attack though.
Maybe it's the Russians trying to mess up the recent thawing of relations with the US.

Could be, not sure what they'd have to gain from doing that, but 4D chess and all that. :hmmm:

Not just the Americans, the Canadians are reporting similarly.

There's a clue, uh? This is a real mystery ... Holy Batman where are you?

Well Putin has been courting them pretty hard in recent years. He has been to the island twice, had Raoul come to Moscow. He's forgiven billions in Soviet era debts, made agreements and loans for infrastructure development, thermal energy and oil exploration. Heck they're even started shipping Russian oil to Cuba again to make up for shortfalls from that other socialist paradise Venezuela. I'd think cooling of relations between the west and Cuba would both protect and help advance that agenda significantly.
On the other hand I don't see what advantage the Cuban government would get by making these attacks themselves. My gut tells me that somebody is setting them up as Patsies and the signs seem to point to Moscow. I could be wrong...

If they think it is some sort of sonic thing, why can't we bring in sensors to identify and locate the source?

That's a good question. The news reports i've been seeing say that these things can be hand held and there can be a delay between exposure and noticeable effects I guess that could make it difficult to locate the sources.

It would be a real kick in the butt if it turns out to be one of our own counter-surveillance efforts.

Speaking of Russia I hope they don't make a play for Puerto Rico with all of this hurricane mayhem and the delay in Trump sending money and supplies to their island.
They already influence Cuba and Venezuela, but that's another subject.
I hope they solve this mystery soon and keep us informed of the embassy staff's health.
Will they suffer just a little while or for life?

I think the last thing Russia would want is to take over financial responsibility for PR.
Besides the civilian resistance to such a take over would be prohibitively expensive with little benefit for Russia.
It is in Russia's best interest to have the US continue financially supporting PR.

Okay with me ... remember Russians are chess players and they might make a play in some other ways ... the communist party was started in small groups of four (4) or five (5) people. All it would take is a little civil unrest to get it started.

This thread is about Cuba so I will start another thread about the problem in Puerto Rico: https://www.facebook.com/newlypress/videos/vb.1859948660936173/1901429200121452/?type=2&theater
