Any advice for a nub going to a boat in the next few weeks?

Don't know what size vessel, but, as a minimum:
Take additional warm clothing particularly additional socks and dry shoes.
Take water.
Take some waterproof bags (for the above).
Ensure there is a small pail on board for emergency bailing.
Lastly, the fisherman's rule to take about the weather (or the engine, or anything):
'if in doubt, don't go out.'

When I told my old submariner friend that I wanted to be a pilot, he said this.
"There's really not a lot of difference between us except that if we have problems we can maybe swim to the surface. You have to rely on an ejection seat and if that fails....You can't swim through the air."
Wonder what type of boat he means-A cruise ship, A merchant or one of these big fishing boats ?
