Third Patrol. November 10th 1939. It's been 7 days at sea. BDU instructed me to patrol AN0286 for 24 hours. I decided to go there the long way, following the Norwegian coast.
Seeing land marks would make my navigation easier, as I do it by calculating bearing and speed every 2 hours. I was also hoping to catch some merchant traffic (which I didn't) without the hassle of British escort ships.
Being concerned about the moral of my men, I sped up northbound at a steady 16 knots, burning fuel like crazy. North of the Shetlands I received a coded message from BDU increasing the patrol range to 200 km and the time spend there to 48 hours. That is troublesome because it foreshadows a long patrol far from home waters. It’s the first time I will have to manage my fuel to get home.
The dotted lines in the map are my navigation errors. Particularly frightful is the second error (due to heavy storms in the Shetlands messing with my calculations), as my crew yelled the feared “flugzeug gesichtet” and I ordered a crash dive, thinking I was in deep waters. I wasn't. I was actually near the Scotland coast in shallow waters. I scratched my VIIA pretty badly (is the Hull Integrity % in TWoS accurate?) and my crew is trying since then to get the repairs going (some items never seem to get their repair % up for some reason, is that WAI?).
When I finally reached the first patrol area, which should be of heavy merchant traffic, I spend my 48 hours patrolling at 7 knots without seeing a single ship. I am a little concerned, because the hydros are not picking a thing, and my fuel gauge already marks 60%. In seven days I only once heard a ship to lose it mysteriously all of a sudden, as if it had vanished).
My second patrol area is north of the Hebrides, AN3586 (200 km, 48h). How would you get there in order to get some tonnage and morale (second meal is ready), without endangering my sub too much? Should I go through the Minch? Or is it too risky and it’s better to keep the land on the starboard side? I’d rather get my boys home than to sink some tonnage and rest at the bottom of the Hebrides Sea.
I know is a totally uneventful patrol, but wanted to share this, I am really enjoying SH5 with TWoS and real navigation, finally being able to write about the game and not the soup mods to make it seaworthy :O:
