Its August 21st! Im expecting 80% partial eclipse of the sun from Maryland. Gonna try to take the day off and break out my 8" reflector and try to grab a few pics.

My wife and I plan to travel down to South Carolina to catch totality. We'll probably go to Columbia, where I was born.

One of my favorite parks is down that way though its closer to the Sumter area. Poinsett State park constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp. Great for a quiet fall gettaway with the wifey. However many trees to see an eclipse

I'm hoping I live close enough to at least get the effect of totality. I'm about a hundred miles (160km) north.

Here is a map (http://astro.ukho.gov.uk/eclipse/0412017/usa/usa_2017.html) which shows how much of the eclipse will be visible and where. There's another total eclipse in 2024 (http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/2024_April_TSE.pdf) which will be visible in North America.

You can search for eclipses by year here (http://astro.ukho.gov.uk/eclbin/query_usno.cgi), or for more options, see the eclipses and transits section here (http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/astronomical-applications/data-services).

I'll try, but first I'll have to dig out the wife's old Cannon SLR from the attic. The only camera I have is an old Pentax digital which doesn't have enough zoom to get a good shot.

Come to think of it...I'll have to re-familiarize myself with how to work the SLR. It's been a long time. I should probably get on that ASAP. I wonder if I can even find film for it locally.

AFAIK, I shouldn't need solar film for taking shots of totality. You don't even need to wear those special glasses during that time.

Many states are preparing for the eclipse like its a natural disaster. Think I'll stick closer to home.

Here is a computer simulation of what the solar eclipse will look like for any area. Just enter your location and it works.
I'll get a little sliver of sun.

Ah...yes, I see.

If you can travel down around Volgograd on June 1st, 2030 (http://www.solar-eclipse.de/eclipse/images/countrymap_political_2030-06-01_RU.png) then you can see an annular eclipse. Not quite as spectacular as a total eclipse, but it doesn't look like western Russia will see one of those until 2061. :(

Enter city state or latitude and logitude to get an estimated time and percent of totality.

Wear sunglasses and get some eye drops ... don't take this event for granted.

BETTER: regular sunglasses block about 60% of light rays while eclipse glasses block 99.9% of light rays. You shouldn’t be able to see anything through a safe solar filter except the Sun itself or something comparably bright, such as the Sun reflected in a mirror, a sunglint off shiny metal, the hot filament of an unfrosted incandescent light bulb, a bright halogen light bulb, a bright-white LED flashlight (including the one on your smartphone), or an arc-welder’s torch,” the AAS wrote in its press release. “All such sources should appear quite dim through a solar viewer.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/08/04/vendors-may-be-selling-fake-solar-eclipse-glasses-heres-how-to-make-sure-yours-are-real/?utm_term=.755258920e8f (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/capital-weather-gang/wp/2017/08/04/vendors-may-be-selling-fake-solar-eclipse-glasses-heres-how-to-make-sure-yours-are-real/?utm_term=.755258920e8f)

Don't bother to write about this solar eclipse, ´cause some day after the earth will be destroyed.

Read about it on a Danish news paper-Again these conspiracies have a new day in September.

Back to topic.

The Time animation shows what the eclipse might look like through an equatorial mounted telescope. For an observer simply looking through some eclipse glasses, the Moon will appear to take a curved path relative to the Sun.

Click here for animation (http://astro.ukho.gov.uk/eclipse/0412017/Columbia_SC_United_States_2017Aug21_anim.gif).

Just watched it. We had a few people gathered at one of the patios at our apartment complex. I couple of them had the special glasses, and we all took turns looking. We're quite a way south of the full eclipse and saw about 91%. The sky wasn't exactly dark, but it was like an overcast day, without a cloud in the sky. There were also lots of little "eclipse" reflections on the sidewalk where the sunlight filtered through the leaves on the trees.

Well, after great views of the early stages of the eclipse from my Rockin Robbins observatory in Deland, FL, I found that contrary to predictions we had a 100% eclipse here, not the 87% projected. Unfortunately it's because we had a superior eclipse caused by terrestrial clouds, completely blotting out the sun from about 20 minutes before maximum and continuing now, over half an hour later.

So yay! I didn't have to travel 500 miles to see a 100% eclipse, but boo! it wasn't the eclipse I was hoping to see.

Took my welding helmets to work. Turns out the auto darkening helmet doesn't quite work right if you don't hold it perfectly towards the eclipse, and the lens might turn off.

So there was a lot of "Oh That's Awesome! AHHHHHHH MY EYES!", as the helmet got passed around.

Took this with my phone through one of the helmets:

I watched 100%. A good portion of Missouri was in the totality zone so I was able to drive about 25 minutes and be within that.

100% totality was awesome. Sky went dark but horizons looked like a sunset. The light refracting around the moon made a sort of rainbow-y ring around the moon and it was totally cool for the minute and a half of it that we had. Unfortunately I was not able to get any pictures of the 100% eclipse. But it's definitely one of the coolest things I've ever witnessed.

My wife and I went to South Carolina to see totality. It was absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, we didn't take any pictures. I never did get the SLR ready and even if I had, I'm not sure I would have remembered to take pictures of totality. It was too mesmerizing.

There were quite a few clouds which obstructed the view before totality and it even started raining for a bit. But, it cleared up just before totality and we got to see that from beginning to end. What luck!

Just awesome.
