Fall is on the way and football season is almost here. Are you ready for a rumble ? :D There are many questions such as, will the New England Patriots win another Superbowl ? the Patriots are heavily favored.
Oddly enough, it won't be all that long before Hockey season starts anew. It will be interesting to see how the next Olympic Hockey series fares. The 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Games are a year away. In a new development, current NHL players are not eligible to play in the Olympics. A work around would be those players who retire from the NHL or remained unsigned and thus eligible to compete in the Olympics. Rosters for the Canadian and American teams without NHL players will be drastically different than in years past.
Jim Paek (Korean (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_language): 백지선, Baek Chi-sun, born April 7, 1967) is a Canadian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadians) former professional (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professional) ice hockey (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_hockey) player, who is currently the director of hockey for the Korea Ice Hockey Association (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korea_Ice_Hockey_Association) and head coach of the South Korean national team (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Korea_men%27s_national_ice_hockey_team). Jim Paek remains remains the only Korean born player to have his name on the Stanley cup, twice, having played for the Pittsburgh Penguins when the Penguins won the cup in 1991 and 1992. Jim Paek believes he can field a competitive team for the Olympics.
All in all, there is a lot to like if you are a sports fan.

Time for some football ... it seems like just the other day that the best Super Bowl ever played was on TV (Feb 5th or so).
Sure this is just preseason, but as good as the NBA playoffs were this year ... I'm ready for some football. :yep:

I can understand why you would make that comment. CTE or Chronic traumatic encephalopathy of the brain has been found in athletes who play sports where there is a prevalence of repeated blows to the head as in Hockey, football, boxing and other sports. It's manifestations are characterized by thinking, comprehension and memory issues and behavioral changes like chronic depression and aggression. The Pathology or neuropathological appearance are differentiated from other neurological diseases like Alzheimer's by a reduction in brain weight, associated with atrophy of the frontal and temporal cortices and medial temporal lobe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medial_temporal_lobe).
People may not experience potential signs of CTE until years or decades after brain injuries occur. A definitive diagnosis of CTE can only be made after death, when an autopsy can reveal whether the known brain changes of CTE are present. Certainly, individuals who have suffered multiple concussions are in that high risk Category.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chronic_traumatic_encephalopathy
Sadly, the early signs of CTE have been found in young children who also have played football and Hockey and sports where head injuries and concussions are prevalent. Some sporting combines in the U.S have taken steps to mitigate these injuries for example by not allowing children who play soccer ( football in the U.K ) to make ball blocks with their head.
Certainly, Boxers are at high risk for CTE. Mohamad Ali ( Cassius Clay )
In 1984, Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson's syndrome (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkinsonism), a disease that sometimes results from head trauma from violent physical activities such as boxing. Questions remain at to whether Ali had CTE as well.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali
A good friend of mine that I went to college with played Rugby and loved it. Rugby is a pretty rough and robust sport and I'm wondering if any changes are contemplated or have already been implemented in the U.K, Germany or elsewhere in light of CTE diagnosis's in the U.S . Rugby is also a cherished game in the U.K. Rugby players don't wear helmets either like most early NHL and amateur hockey players.
I think that young children who play in sports with a high degree of physical contact are most at risk and parents should know the risks so that they can make an intelligent and informed decision as to allow their children to participate in these sports. Other things could be done such as rule changes and better engineered equipment or a combination of both.
It would be interesting to see what our Subsim Members in the U.K and elsewhere feel about these Issues.

Rugby, while a contact game like Hockey and Football, is played a lot differently. Hockey's concussions are mostly due to players heads impacting the ice or the boards and there's been speculation that the pads and helmets worn by modern Football players actually contribute to concussions instead of preventing them. This is because their insulation and protection promote high speed hits whereas if you took that stuff away tackles would be mostly the pull down type which are far less dangerous with regards to head injuries.
A little off topic story
Saw the picture of the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. 10 min later I read an article in a Danish news paper, about a fastfood business Chick-fil-a had made a little mistake.
The mistake is that they have, since 1940 always closed on Sundays and Atlanta Falcons 7 of 8 home game will be played on Sundays.
The Stadium will be filled these 7 Sundays, while this fastfood will be closed. and be open other 6 days where there may not be so many at the stadium.
End of A little off topic story.

The rest of the story is that the owner of Chick-fil-A is a devoted Christian that closes all of his stores on Sunday, but the stadium is so big that it has two other fast food restaurants that serve chicken biscuits.
Another side of Chick-fil-A is that they don't serve any chicken with bones in it either. I ate at one back in Atlanta a long time ago and it was really good food.
Another funny thing about Chick-fil-A is that the owner even looks like a chicken, but he has good food. :D

Good point August. However, individuals can also suffer concussions without actual physical contact to the head. The contact can be a " jarring " one to the body. The contact is where the brain suffers " bruises " while coming into contact with the inside of the skull. If an individual is moving in one direction and their body is hit and suddenly is jolted and stopped, the brain will continue in the previous direction and make contact with the inside of the skull, thereby bruising the brain.
Quote:
What is a concussion?
A concussion (http://www.webmd.com/hw-popup/concussion-traumatic-brain-injury) is a type of traumatic brain (http://www.webmd.com/brain/picture-of-the-brain) injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain (http://www.webmd.com/brain/rm-quiz-amazing-brain) inside the skull. Although there may be cuts or bruises (http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/guide/bruises-article) on the head or face, there may be no other visible signs of a brain (http://www.webmd.com/brain/video/brain-training) injury.
What causes a concussion?
Your brain is a soft organ that is surrounded by spinal fluid and protected by your hard skull. Normally, the fluid around your brain acts like a cushion that keeps your brain from banging into your skull. But if your head or your body is hit hard, your brain can crash into your skull and be injured.
There are many ways to get a concussion. Some common ways include fights, falls, playground (http://www.webmd.com/children/tc/playground-safety-topic-overview) injuries, car crashes, and bike accidents. Concussions can also happen while participating in any sport or activity such as football, boxing, hockey, soccer, skiing, or snowboarding.
http://www.webmd.com/brain/tc/traumatic-brain-injury-concussion-overview#1
I also enjoy Hockey, football and baseball and was active in all of them. That being said, I'm not sure what the answer is to minimize or prevent concussions in sports.
I understand how it works but what i'm saying is that without helmets and hard pads the game of football would be played quite differently than it is with them.

Do you feel these games are safer without protective equipment ? Do you see any ways to make these games safer, especially for younger kids who are still growing and developing ? I had said before that I think the answers may well be a combination of better designed equipment and rule changes. I still feel that way.
Like you, I enjoy Football and Hockey games and such but they are after all, just a game. The players in the games and The lives involved should always be number one, especially for younger kids who might not fully comprehend the risks when they play sports.
I wonder if there are ways to better protect players while still retaining the essence of the respective sports they enjoy playing and that the fans enjoy watching.

Does anyone have thoughts, ideas or predictions on who will do well this year, including new draft picks / choices ? How about which team will win it all this year ? We all Know which team August is for. :D
Will the Patriots and Tom Brady repeat as Superbowl winners ?
Do you feel these games are safer without protective equipment ?
Not without protective equipment at all, just not the ballistic plastic armor system like they use now. I feel that a soft helmet and padding might make players less eager to make high speed hits which is what causes most concussions.
Take a look at the gif below.
#34 just runs into the QB at full speed. No attempt to wrap him up and pull him down. He's doing that because he is protected by armor.
http://www.pbh2.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/big-football-sacks.gif
With soft pads it's going to be more like this.
http://i.imgur.com/3F2XyeI.gif
See how the tackler tries to wrap his arms around the ball carrier and pull him down instead of crashing into him full speed? Yeah I know he wasn't successful but it illustrates the difference in technique fairly well. This is what I mean. By removing the armor players are forced to grab and pull their opponents to the ground instead of trying to hit them. That might be safer than the situation we have now.

I'm not sure if this is the answer August but it seems as good as any place to analyze and look into and who knows, you could be right and on to something. If you are right and it quickly filters down to school age kids playing football and other sports, than it's a great thing. This is as good an explanation and solution as any that I have heard. Junior Seau and Mike Webster of the NFL are tragic examples of the repeated concussions they both suffered and the repercussions of their hall of fame careers and multiple concussions.
My hope is that Da Bears will perform a little better this season.

Brady at 40 should be at his best ... I hope he doesn't get hurt though.
I'm going to be watching a lot less football due to the price of satellite, but I'll still get four to five games a week with Monday night, Thursday night and Sunday night and two on local channels plus NFL reports and You-tube highlights will give me more than enough football.
I hear interest in football has been going down ... they need to find way to speed up the game with less commercials. :yep:

I know it's early and the preseason but i'm thinking in the NFC the GreenBay packers at 2-0 and the Atlanta Falcons at 1-1 should have a good year.
In the AFC, The Patriots should continue their winning ways. The Steelers should be in the thick of things if they can fix their pourus secondary which cost them the AFC championship game last year. Maybe this is the year the Cleveland Browns pull it together. Their fans deserve something of a winning team having supported the Browns for years.

Great game ... the proud and the mighty humbled on Thursday night football :yep:
Same as last year no NFL live for me.
Two reasons
1. If I wanna follow the team I like more than the others I have to get 3 different sport channels
2. I could get a membership in some online streaming service, where they stream NFL games and you can pick which one you like to see
However-Stories from IRL friends online friends and news article I really don't like these streaming service
Furthermore I'm from the old time-I wanna see the game on my TV not on my computer. It's better to watch it on a 40 " screen than on a 17" screen
Have to read about it in the sport news

The NFL won’t seek to strip Jerry Jones of the Cowboys: ‘That’s ridiculous.’
The NFL will not attempt to force Jerry Jones to sell the Dallas Cowboys over his efforts to oppose the owners’ pending contract extension with Commissioner Roger Goodell, according to the owner of one franchise and several others familiar with the situation.
“I don’t know where this is coming from about stripping him of his franchise,” the owner said Thursday, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the threat of litigation by Jones. “That’s ridiculous. That’s not going to happen.”
That was confirmed by two others with knowledge of the league’s inner workings.

What does this "Wild Card" mean ?

This should pretty much explain it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_card_(sports)#National_Football_League
The short explanation is it is the game to determine which of the non winning teams gets a chance to play the division champions in the playoffs. We just love underdogs and it's a way to give one a chance to go all the way.

Speaking of wild cards: Five time Super Bowl loser( a record) Minnesota Vikings, may just DO IT! Still, if I had to pick the most fascinating development in the NFC—and probably the playoffs as a whole—I’d go with the Minnesota Vikings. THE FOLLOWING PARAGRAPH SHOULD NOT BE READ BY SUPERSTITIOUS VIKINGS FANS, WHO WILL BE FURIOUS THAT I AM JINXING THEIR TEAM AND HOLD ME RESPONSIBLE IF THEY BLOW IT. I really think this could be the year when it actually happens: an NFL team gets to host a home Super Bowl. The Vikings are the two seed; they’ll get at least one home playoff game, and with the Eagles so wobbly, there’s a solid chance that the league title game will wind up in Minneapolis. The Vikings were 7-1 at home this year, quarterback Case Keenum http://www4.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Case+Keenum+Ununoh3g7V4m.jpg has gone from journeyman to Lost Son of Fran Tarkenton (https://www.wsj.com/articles/vikings-case-keenum-continues-to-be-overlooked-1512667869), https://i.ebayimg.com/thumbs/images/g/7m4AAOSwzaJX9Sjf/s-l225.jpg and the whole city is watched over by the purple spirit of local son Prince... Have a question I keep on forgetting and last time I remembered it, this thread was way back.
Now and then during a Sunday or a Monday game they put up the NFL standings and I see the word "Wild Card"
Under these two words there are 2 to 3 NFL team
What does this "Wild Card" mean ?
Markus
Means they still have another chance to be the top dog in the NFL due to their records behind the top four in each league of the NFL which the NFC and the AFC.
Buffalo was 9-7 and beat out the LA Chargers also 9-7 even though the Chargers beat Buffalo really bad they had won more head to head battles in the AFC and won the right to play in the wild card game.
I predict that Buffalo ... yes Buffalo will go to the Super Bowl against who I do not know, but they have been long overdue for a chance to play in the playoffs much less the Super Bowl.
Now here's a real shocker: https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/report-belichick-sees-an-opening-to-coach-giants/ar-BBHV0Li
Can Bill Belichick, yes Bill Belichick, be the next coach of the Giants? With a report of turmoil in New England involving him, Tom Brady and Robert Kraft, it certainly seems feasible.
“I’m sure Bill knows this is his last chance to be the Giants coach,” a source close to Belichick said Friday. “Bill sees an opening — an opening to get to the Giants.”vThe source has not spoken to Belichick since the story came out, but is very familiar with The Hoodie’s desire to coach the Giants.
The source also said he’s not certain if the reported friction and tension in New England will prompt Belichick to force his way out, but if he does, he said he is certain, “The Giants are the only place he wants to be.”

Coach Gruden is back

ALAMEDA, CALIF.
The Oakland Raiders have officially hired Jon Gruden as their coach.
The team announced the move Saturday as soon as Gruden finished his final broadcast as an announcer for ESPN. Gruden will be formally introduced at a news conference Tuesday.
Gruden is returning for a second stint as coach of the Raiders after being traded to Tampa Bay following the 2001 season. He led the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title over Oakland the following season. He has been out of coaching since being fired by Tampa Bay after the 2008 season.

Due to the Saints QB and home field advantage ... :yep:
I thought the Panthers were going to make a comeback for a moment there after their QB got sacked and hit in the head and dragged off the field. He comes back on and throws a touch down pass ... one missed field goal kept the Panthers out of reach of a win.

Saturday NFL postseason games
Falcons (11-6) at Eagles (13-3)
4:35 p.m. ET, Saturday (NBC)
For the first time ever, a No. 6 seed is a favorite to beat the No. 1 overall seed in any conference. Because of the ACL injury to Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz, the Falcons are slight favorites to win at Lincoln Financial Field.
Titans (10-7) at Patriots (13-3)
8:15 p.m. ET, Saturday (CBS)
The Titans pulled off an epic rally last Saturday to upset the Chiefs in the Wild Card Round. Now they’ll have to defeat another favored opponent who knows a little something about monumental playoff comebacks — the New England Patriots. The two teams will meet on Saturday in the Divisional Round; kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. ET

The New England Patriots cruised past the Tennessee Titans, 35-14,
on Saturday night to advance to their seventh consecutive conference title game.
New England (14-3) will host the winner of Sunday's divisional match up between Jacksonville and Pittsburgh.
Sunday January 14th
Jaguars (11-6) at Steelers (13-3), at Heinz field
When: 1:05 p.m.
Saints (12-5) at Vikings (13-3), at U.S. Bank Stadium
When: 4:40 p.m
I programmed my USB and watched Patriots against Titans
Oh man-what a different. There weren't any doubt who was going to win that game.
In the beginning it was a stand-off and the first touchdown by the Titans didn't scare the Patriots.
I think Patriots are the favorit in their next match, which will be against either Pittsburgh Steelers or Jacksonville Jaguars.
Every time Patriots made a touchdown or did something good on the field I was thinking-Now August is celebrating.

Friends I have additional question about NFL.
Earlier I asked about this Wild Card. Maybe I have missed it, when I read about it in the link August gave me.
1 What decide or what rules do they use to give a team the wild card ? Why I'm asking is I'm sure there is many more NFL team who would be as good as these who got this Wild Card.
Something else
During the lastest transmission from the NFL I have seen a commercial logo for something called Pro Bowl 26/27 January 3 pm
What is that ?
Is there a professional version of NFL ?
Before the play they showed us each player and under these players there was 2 letters like:
SS, RB, CB(not really sure if I have remembered this correctly) and others
I know QB means Quarterback
So my question is what does these two letter means and what is their job/task on the field ?
Markus

Actually no there aren't. if two teams vying for wild card status have the same number of wins and losses then they go with the team that beat the other team during the regular season. Same way they determine home field advantage. First the ones with the better record and then the one with the better record against the other candidates.

The ProBowl is a special exhibition called an "All Star Game" that is played by certain regular NFL players from around the league. They are chosen by their fellow players and coaches by lottery.

Per CBS Sports, here’s the breakdown for this year:

Losing team player bonus: $56,000

This Super Bowl in now in the history books. Just like the fictitious underdog Character Rocky Balboa, native son of Philadelphia, The underdog Eagles now stand at the pinnacle of their sport. The Eagles overcame devastating injuries to not only get to the biggest dance of the year but also win it. Having seen a few Eagles games this season, I thought they had a great chance of winning. I'm happy for the Eagles and their fans that they have now won their first Superbowl. It may well be the first of many. The Eagles, just Like Rocky, looked hungry where the Patriots looked like they sleep walking through most of the first half. I was pleased to see this game wasn't over officiated as some i have seen this year.
Quote: The Eagles were an underdog in Super Bowl LII as the NFC squad, led by an untested coach with only two years at the reins and a backup quarterback, 29-year-old Nick Foles, who had never won a playoff game before this season. New England, at most betting outlets, was favored to win by 4.5 points.
Foles was thrust into the starting role after MVP contender Carson Wentz was lost for the season when he suffered a torn ACL and LCL in a week 14 win over the Los Angeles Rams.
On Sunday, Foles was a marksman, completing 28 of 43 passes for 373 yards and three touchdowns. He also became the first QB in Super Bowl history to also catch a touchdown pass, en route to becoming the game's MVP.
https://www.yahoo.com/gma/philadelphia-eagles-top-england-patriots-win-first-super-032503377--abc-news-topstories.html
Tom Brady for his part had an astounding 505 yards passing.
With a history of cheating with regards to Spygate and Deflategate, I've never been a fan of the Patriots. Speaking about Tom Brady and deflated balls, I'm sure there are many deflated balls in Brady land including his. :haha:
I wouldn't feel too bad for the Patriots though. The Patriots have appeared in the Super Bowl ten times in franchise history, the most of any team, eight of them since the arrival of head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady in 2000 and won five of them.
The legacy of the patriots was cemented long ago and Tom Brady / Bill Belichick and others from their team will no doubt be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day. The combination of Belichick and Brady are the most prolific to date and will be difficult to equal and their history is still being written.
Making it to the Superbowl is an accomplishment in and of itself
so congratulations to the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles on a great season and exciting and well played Superbowl game.
Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans on a great Superbowl win.

The fourth down trick play TS to Nick Foles was an illegal formation, should have been called back...extended WR to the top of the screen is off the ball (needs to be on the line with just the OT on inside him).

Aw, you're just piqued because when the Patriots tried a similar play earlier, it was an epic fail ("Butterfingers Brady" :haha:). The Eagles, with a backup QB leading the team really showed the Pats how its done...

First of all
I thought it was a great Super Bowl.
Secondly
There is a saying
You shall never change a wining concept
The problem with this concept is that an opponent or their head coach are studying this to find an "antidote" (couldn't remember the word I would have used) against this.

When a top defensive player is benched and the Eagles QB goes against his replacements scoring eight (8) times out of ten (10) with the football ... it comes down to why?
Could it be the flu (I don't think so) http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/patriots/2018/02/what_went_into_malcolm_butlers_benching_in_super_b owl_loss
Butler did have a challenging week. He went to the hospital in Boston two Sundays ago to get treated for flu symptoms and wasn’t well enough the next day to fly with the team to Minneapolis, so he arrived Tuesday. Butler said he finally began to feel like himself by Thursday, so his practice snaps were limited on the previous days.
Could it be contract negotiations?
Two weeks ago, Butler openly reflected on his personal journey and admitted that it crossed his mind Super Bowl LII could be his last game with the Patriots. Could Belichick have viewed that as a sign Butler was thinking about himself ahead of the team? Or was the public benching the culmination of a drawn-out bout of contentious contract negotiations, or lack thereof?
Everyone has been left to guess. Belichick informed Butler before kickoff that he wouldn’t play, but the reason wasn’t given, according to a source.

But whatever the reason he's not that good that he would have made the difference.
I'm not so sure on that. The Patriots posted a 13-3 record as did the Eagles during the regular season. The Patriots did that with Malcolm Butler in the secondary. There are a lot of variables and factors that contribute to that record including the coaching and Tom Brady at quarterback. The Eagles quarterback, Nick Foles, shredded the patriots secondary, doing a good job of mixing his passing with an effective run game.
The Patriots were caught flat footed a number of times as the Eagles moved up and down the field at will. Malcolm Butler was scheduled to play CB in the Superbowl but scratched the night before ? If Butler was good enough to play during the regular season and helped get the Patriots to the Superbowl, why remove him ? This seems like a case of cutting off your nose to spite your face. Apparently, adding Outside Linebacker James Harrison wasn't enough to make much of a difference either although he did have a sack.
Belichek, if the Patriots aren't playing well, will make adjustments during half time to counter whatever the other team is doing to play better in the 2nd half. If Belichick did make adjustments, it had no effect on what Nick Foles and the Eagles were doing. On the other hand, the Patriots offense and TE Gronkowski woke up a bit and played better in the 2nd half.
The very definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
If the patriots couldn't stop the Eagles from moving the ball, then inserting Butler back in at Cornerback couldn't possibly hurt and I think he would have helped slow down the Eagles offense and passing game. At the very least, the Eagles would have had to make adjustments in their passing game to compensate for Butler being in the secondary. With Butler playing, the Patriots might have been able to be more creative with corner blitzes and other defensive schemes to disrupt what Nick Foles and the Eagles offense was doing. On the other hand, as Mr Quatro had said, Butler was battling the flu so who knows how much of an impact he would have had if he had played.
That's just my thoughts though.
Mr Quatro
02-07-18, 10:10 AM
Butler did say out loud, to anyone that cared to listen, that this might be his last game, plus the other players snitched and said it might be the weed and women he was fond of before the game.
They lost and the spot light is on Belichek's decision to bench Butler ... he is one tough coach for sure.
This time, I for one think, it cost New England the game, but Belichek's tough stance is bible based "Let your yea be yea and let your nay be nay"
One note I noticed is that Belichek is reported to have let his favorites slide on weed and women before ... so maybe it was something else?
Still a great game if you were a Philly fan, uh? Did you see the stupid crazy things the fans did after the game?

A bettor on Friday at William Hill placed a $1 million money-line bet on the Eagles at +155 odds. If Philadelphia pulls the upset over the New England Patriots, the unnamed bettor would net a $1,550,000 profit.
Someone placed a $1 million wager on the Patriots as well, bringing the total to five million-dollar bets.
Some odd things happening up here in New England.
McDaniels leaving Indy at the altar by backing out of the head coach gig at the last second was completely unexpected as was the Butler benching, as was the Garapolo trade. "In Bill We Trust" is wearing a bit thin.
Butler denies all allegations and has a significant amount of supporters on the team including TB12. Then there are the lingering questions over the Garapolo trade. We really should have gotten a much better deal for him and the question is why we didn't.
Local speculation is that Belichick will be gone in a year or two, either retired or rage quitting depending on which theory you believe and that Kraft has lined up McDaniels as his replacement.
