Hi Skippers, need some of your expert advice about a problem I'm having getting RFB to load.
I downloaded and installed RFB 2.0 and the 2.0 patch into the Steam version of SH4. I used Generic Mod Enabler to install. After the loading screens, I get a bar indicating game loading progress. It gets to about 90% then hangs up. It won't go any farther. The only way to leave this screen is to shut down and restart the computer.
Same thing happened when I tried to load RFB 1.4 out of curiosity.
Any ideas?
Do you have any other mods installed?
Is your SH4 version the correct one for RFB? (I don't know RFB, but I'm assuming it's made for v1.5)

Thanks for the reply. I have the basic steam addition. Can't tell what the version is.
I've loaded other minor mods with no problem, and just added RSRD without any hiccups.

So grandpa55, you don't have the U-Boat Missions Add-on, which was another $5-$10US if your bought it? If not, then you have v1.3 of Silent Hunter: Wolves of the Pacific. A lot of the mods won't function correctly with it. Your experience with RSRDC might be due to different files being changed.
I'm going to guess you have Steam installed in your C:\ Program Files (x86) \ folder?
Can't tell what the version is.
On the main menu screen, look in the lower right corner. I believe that's where the version is shown. 1.1-1.4 were free patches that were released. Version 1.5, the latest one, was released as a paid addition, labeled U-Boat Missions. I'm not familiar with the Steam version, but as propbeanie says, they do sell an older version (which has caused a lot of confusion for new players).
Some smaller mods work on both versions, but a lot of larger mods only work on the newer 1.5 version. It also included some fixes, so it's worth it to get it, even if, like me, you never touch the u-boats in the game.

You are correct sir, Steam is installed in the x86 folder.
I found the version no, its 1.3, the basic Steam version with no updates. This has helped me a bunch, and will look for updates to 1.5 or earlier versions of RFB.
Thanks for the help and good hunting.

I noticed there is a 1.4 patch update on the download station. Do you know which version of RFB works with that?

Hi g55
RFB 2.0 is for version SH4 v.1.5 only. Do not expect the mod to work with earlier versions of the game. Installation notes from RFB post #1
The U-Boat Missions Add-on patches the game to v1.5

... and the v1.4 patch will NOT take on a Steam install anymore, due to their licensing scheme. As a head's up, Steam is doing their summer sale right now, and it's $5.00...

Of course, Amazon, in a continuing quest to keep up with the Jones, has the Gold Edition download for $5... Follow the link from the SubSim Store (http://www.subsim.com/store.html), and the site gets a cut of the action there... I mention it, since it doesn't have quite as many issues with the online licensing, though they are getting somewhat trying also now...
What ever you do though, Windows does not like you changing things in certain areas of the computer without going through Windows itself. It's part of the User Access Control (UAC). The "Program Files" directories and a few others are "protected" folders. You'll want to use the Steam app on your computer, log-in, and manage your install folder. THEBERBSTER has a thread #3 linked to (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2297821#post2297821) in his signature about it (the dodougla part), and I finally got around to looking into my Steam install of SH3 & 5 and took me a screen shot of the Steam App here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2496891#post2496891) on how I managed to get to the settings. If you get the game out of the Program Files directory, the mods "take" and things work much better.

Thanks for all the help folks.
I managed to skirt around the problem by buying the Amazon Gold edition which is v1.5. For $5 you can't go wrong, right? The $5 to Steam and the $5 Amazon 1.5 patch was a waste, but if that's the only money I loose in my life there will be no crying!
Anyway its up and running with RFB 2.0 and the patch. It has crashed on me twice when I had RSRD mod installed. Will have to check into that.
In reality, I'm not sure that the RSRD mod works well from YouTube video's I've watched. I think the convoys are too big for the game to handle and they do some stupid things.
So a word to other newbs like me.
1. Don't get the Steam edition. Some of the mods do not recognize the Steam install.
2. Go for the Amazon version for the same price which is already the upgraded version 1.5. It will take the other mods with no problem, unlike the Steam version.
Have fun. Good hunting!

The Steam version can be made to work as well as the Amazon, as well as the Ubisoft download, as well as the DVD version. For all of them, the main thing is to stay out of Windows Protected folders. Do NOT install any version of Sh3, 4 or 5 in the Program Files directory. Windows, from Vista up through 10 will "roll back" a lot of the changes made in a Protected folder, especially to exe, dll and cfg files, of which there are a gob of the latter in SH4. This might be why RSRDC is doing the CTD dance on you. You also might have to "Run as administrator" and / or pick an emulation mode on the SH4.exe Properties page. See some more of THEBERBSTER's signature links (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2297818#post2297818).
Another thing might be memory control... Refer to CapnScurvy's Windows10; Large Address Aware; SH4 Install (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?p=2452635#post2452635). He gets into the details. If I already told you about it, please forgive me... but it does good...
The problem with the Steam version (of anything) is that you have to use Steam for updates, and with Silent Hunter 4, Steam does not have a v1.4 update. You have to buy ~their~ v1.5 UBoat Missions instead.
The Gold version was a good choice, especially for 5 smackers. :yeah:

Hi g55
propbeanie makes a good point about Steam updates.
I have also read on the forum that these updates screws up any changes you have made to your game.
Still having problems, check out the link below, highly recommended.

I think we've all forgotten to mention, but you must have all mods de-activated when you go to do updates... I'm not sure, but if I'm remembering correctly, it will wipe your My Documents \ SH4 save folder, but it it doesn't, do it yourself. Do not use anything from the previous version with the updated one.
