I’m Rick, call sign grandpa55 and a new member here at subsim.com. Happy to be with you, and look forward to your insight and expertise as I learn my way around a new game (for me) Silent Hunter 4.
I could also be labeled as “gaming grandpa” as I’m still a gamer into my 60’s. I am mostly into simulator games, flying, driving, sailing, space, and in the last few days got back into submarine sims in the SH4. I dabbled in the ”old days” with classics like Silent Service II and Attack Sub 688. We’ve come a long way baby!!! I’ve kept a remote eye on sub games, particularly WWII era, and took the plunge.
So far it’s been very challenging, very well done, and tests a skippers ability to an extreme.
I’m a medical professional practicing in Michigan for 20 years (my native state).
Prior to that I was Air Force (not Navy) flying F-16’s for 13 years from 1982 to 1995 with 2 tours in the Gulf War. They were the best years of my life.
While in the Gulf I had the opportunity to spend 2 weeks on the USS America and flew as their guest in A-6, F-14 and F-18’s. An outstanding and unique experience, but reminded me why I like 2 miles of stationary runway! My hat is off to my Navy comrades, particularly the flyers.
I was invited to spend a week aboard a nuclear submarine during a shakedown cruise (prior to their patrol) while I was stationed at Shaw AFB is South Carolina. But unfortunately I couldn’t make it due to my responsibilities and the approaching Gulf War. Big disappointment.
I grew up on the Great Lakes and have been on boats all my life. I rarely pass up an opportunity to be on the water. I'm very fortunate to be near the USS Silversides a WWII sub berthed in Muskegon (where I used to live) and spent a lot of time crawling around that boat.
Looking forward to spending some time with you all, and will certainly need your expert advice along the way.
