Hello folks,

appart from beeing a semi successful submarine commander I like to build plastic model kits.

And right now I am a bit on a submarine trip.

So one question is: how should I weather modern subs?
They are usually pretty clean, since growth can decrease the speed and make the boat loud underwater. I've seen some really worn out Trafalgars with lost anti sonar tiles but I failed to recreate that effect. I've also seen some very worn out diesel boats and early russian SSNs.

I thought about a slight washing and some rust streaks.

Which brings me to the next question which is more specific:
I've found a picture of USS Greenling with a sharkmouth: https://bluejacket.com/usn/images/sp/ss/ssn614_greenling.jpg

Does anybody have more pictures of that and when was this worn? I read that active boats have no names and numbers or other markings and that they only carry them durring trials.

I've also found pictures of the K-414 with a crest on it's turret maybe you could help me to identify it: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/3b/63/e5/3b63e52134080442a2541414aa462f88.jpg

If you can't help me out, who else?

cheers, cookie

BTW: are you interessted in seeing some of my other non naval releated work, if so, I would be very happy to put it up.

I know the subs name it was more about that crest and what it is.
I am trying to replicate it so I can apply it to my Victor III kit.

Some Navies camouflage the sail area least they should broach.

Of course we are interested in the work you have done. I would have to look through the threads or you can but someone here created detailed U-boat models that were very weathered. They looked great as well and very realistic.

These video's may help you with ideas and painting tips.

This video looks like a U-boat that hasn't seen a lot of action

This video looks more like what you want, a weathered and well used u boat. It has rust streaks and discolorations as well.

I hope this helps.

Maybe I should just create a general thread wiith all my work.
That video is helpfull but my boats will not be that weather ridden.

But I still don't know about the K-414's crest and USS Greenling's mouth.

K-414's crest is the one of the district of moscow:

I found the name of one of Greenlings last commanders, Steve Clark Hall on google and contacted him on facebook.

Greenling had the mouth in 1993. If I get an Ok from Mr. Hall, I will post the pictures here.
