Took the boy to Newcastle Airport this morning to start his journey to Seattle. He is joining his latest vessel Oosterdam prior to a cruise to Alaska and will be home again in four weeks.

Apparently, the company are short of a senior deck officer in the short term due to some unforeseen circumstances and James is happy to oblige, thus enabling him to get the required sea time in to sit his Masters as quickly as possible.

He should be onboard by now,

I think he's done about half a dozen Alaska cruises thus far but he does admit because of the shallow and often rocky terrain, navigation is a little more intense than normal.

When does he become first officer on that newer cruise vessel you posted about a while back?

Mr Quatro
06-16-17, 09:40 PM
I thought he already was a First Officer ...

What is a first officer on a ship?

A chief mate (C/M) or chief officer, usually also synonymous with the first mate or first officer (except on passenger liners, which often carry both), is a licensed member and head of the deck department of a merchant ship.

Average salaries for Norwegian Cruise Line First Officer: $66235. Norwegian Cruise Line salary trends based on salaries posted anonymously by Norwegian ...

He found it hard to settle in Venice and change to the new working systems of a new ships compliment. Someone (not sure who) made it known to his former Captain who just so happened to be taking his old ship into Venice as part of a scheduled cruise and the boy (by invite) spent the weekend onboard with the Captain and his wife, phone calls were made and emails sent and a couple of weeks later a transfer was arranged which was no biggie really, seeing as how both companies are a part of the same group.

Circumnavigating? That's a far distance; according to the Net, the coastline of Oz is about 35,600 km (22,300 miles); given the circumference at the equator is 40,075 km (24,901 miles), that's near an around the world trip. Very impressive. How long does it take the Young Buna to make that voyage?...

One beautiful picture ... I always wanted to visit French Tahiti

Papeete, on Tahiti, is the capital of French Polynesia, a group of islands in the South Pacific. Beside the port, busy Place Vai’ete fills with roulottes, or food carts, in the evenings. Nearby, the large Marché de Papeete market sells local produce, fish and handicrafts. The Robert Wan Pearl Museum focuses on the local pearl industry and sells jewelry. A red spire tops the 19th-century Notre Dame Cathedral.

^ONE CAN A HAVE A WHALE OF A GOOD TIME IN THE GREAT NORTHLAND:D UNLESS OF COURSE ITS INVOLVING A CRUISE SHIP : https://www.pressherald.com/2016/04/13/cruise-ship-group-sues-juneau-over-plan-for-10-million-whale-sculpture/ A life-sized whale statue has Juneau in hot water after a cruise ship association alleged it’s a symbol of the Alaskan city’s misuse of millions in fees paid by visitors.
The Cruise Lines International Association and its Alaska affiliate sued the city and the borough of Juneau on Tuesday in federal court in Anchorage. They’re challenging the legality of so-called head tax fees paid by cruise passengers who visit the state’s picturesque capital.
Cruise ships collect the fees and pass them on to the city. Juneau gets a $5 entry fee per cruise ship passenger in addition to a per-passenger port development fee of $3.
The association estimates it has paid Juneau more than $35 million in entry fees in the past four years.
The group represents 12 cruise lines, including Carnival, Holland America??!! and Disney. They contend the city has used portions of those fees on projects that do not directly benefit cruise ship passengers and therefore violate federal restrictions on entry fee taxes. :k_confused:

I hope this doesn't happen to your son ... isn't he on the Holland cruise ship line? This could mean his own ship, uh?

https://www.express.co.uk/travel/cruise/1123422/cruises-2019-cruise-2020-holland-america-Oosterdam-Nieuw-Amsterdam-crash-canada-port-watch

Cruise ship collisions are rare - even more so between two vessels from the same company. Firm Holland America suffered this unfortunate scenario when ship Oosterdam struck fellow Holland America carrier, Nieuw Amsterdam, in port in Canada. Those travelling on board both ships in the Vancouver port took to social media to document the drama, with some reporting “crunching sounds” and others heading onto deck to witness the incident.

I knew nothing about this but upon reading your post I called James who just happened to be downstairs in the conservatory eating with his sister and her husband up to the mancave (he came home yesterday) to watch the video clip and he informed me his ship (Eurodam) was in the exact same berth in Vancouver just 24 hours earlier.

EDIT: I forgot to mention he is attending a two day job interview tomorrow to ascertain his suitability for a Port of Tees Pilot position.

Well, having come home just Sunday gone he received a phone call early yesterday morning informing him the Staff Captain on Eurodam has had to leave the ship for urgent personal reasons.

James is now on a flight back to Seattle to provide cover for twelve days.

Boy returns home on Monday and is off on a three week well-earned vacation to Indonesia 17th June.

More importantly though, he has been informed he was successful in his recent applicastion and interview for a Pilots job at the Port of Tees.

The port run a managed retirement system and have informed him that he will commence work at any time between now and three years hence so now it is a waiting game but at least he has something to look forward to and at a greatly enhanced salary level than that which he currently enjoys.

Three (3) years to get a job? :o

Yeah, I initially thought that as well but the job is so specialised and obviously warrants a Master Mariner qualification accompanied with a great deal of local navigational training this means they are few and far between.

Add to that the remuneration package and the fact these positions are highly sought after, a job for life you might say, the port know well in advance when retirements are due and advertise accordingly.

I reckon the boy can struggle along on his current financial package until he gets his turn :03:

Boy messaged me yesterday to inform me he has been asked by his company if he would be interested in the Fleet Safety Managers job.

I understand the salary is over $200,000 per year but it would mean moving to Seattle to live.

His concerns are that he believes it to be a very expensive area to live in because of the fact you have the likes of Microsoft, Boeing and Apple in that city so peoples salary’s are probably higher than normal.

Seattle is a rather expensive place to live and just for the reasons you cited, Jimbuna. I did a quick 'n dirty search and found this; maybe it will help give a perspective:

Cost of Living in Seattle --

https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Seattle

There is a little box right underneath the "Cost of Living" title on the website; if you enter the name of another city, it will give you a comparison between Seattle and the city entered; as an experiment, I entered London, UK and the site returned a comparative list of costs and actually automatically converted the currency values into Pounds. Give it a go and see if it might let the lad make a decision...

BTW, does his company also give a relocation allowance to ease the burden of cost? Might be something to ask about...

I've no idea of the details regarding expenses etc. but he has messaged me a few minutes ago stating his biggest concern would be the cost of living.

Factor in he would probably feel the need to sell his house here in the UK plus the fact he has a definite job in the pipeline for the new year here in the UK and my hunch is he won't be moving abroad.

I can see him fighting for a full refund when he gets back into the UK.

Update: Four months on and in response to a few kind enquiries from forum members.

Suffice to say, the cruise line industry is in turmoil and many people James knows and has worked alongside have been stranded on ships in faraway lands for months on end so he thought his earlier decision was a wise one.

He still awaits an opening for the Pilots position and the lecturing post never materialised due to the fact all of the foreign students returned to their own countries in the space of only a week when the lockdown became obligatory. Sadly, some of the college lecturers are now facing potential redundancy unti things pick up and how long that will be is any ones guess.

Holland America contacted him (my apologies for not stating dates etc. but I don't keep a diary) and asked him to reconsider then followed that up a week or so later with an offer to return to one of the ships to prepare her for a resumption to cruising.

The above offer was not as Captain which rather disappointed him but as Senior First Officer under a Captain known to have anger management issues so James declined and the caller admitted to him that he was the fifth or sixth to respond so.

Next up was contacting agencies only to be told work was obviously hard to find in these unprecedented times but despite that, a week or so later they contacted him and he was soon doing fortnightly trips on dredgers in UK coastal waters.

He did three trips in total and after his first trip he visited his recently retired mentor of many years on the south coast who advised him the cruise industry was probably doomed and never going to be what it was in the past due to cuts in wages and a watering down of training (a costly but vital part of the industry) thereby potentially upping accident levels etc.

This advice imho was probably the final factor in him making the decision he did.

So off he went on his second fortnightly trip but this time with another company and the Captain of that boat was so impressed by him that he put a good word in with the company who happened to have a vacancy for a Captains position.

Next thing we knew he went on his third trip (the second with this company) and a Company Director interviewed him on the boat and he was offered a permanent position.

To keep things in context one shouldn't forget his Senior First Officer duties were performed on vessels 80,000+ tons and the first dredger he was on was around 8,000 tons which he informs me is quite large for the category they are in.

The second and third trips with the second company were on even tinier vessels even when compared to the 8,000 ton vessel (see below) :)

https://i.postimg.cc/YCJ7d27z/UKD-Seahorse-Large.jpg (https://postimages.org/)

http://www.ukdredging.co.uk/UKD_Fleet/UKD_Seahorse/

I don't mind admitting I had a bloody good laugh when he showed me the link from his phone but he wasn't phased by my reaction and told me of what he clearly sees as positive benefits.

In a UK port every night
No sailing in rough weather
Two weeks on and two weeks off
More pay than Holland America
Another string to his bow (CV/Resume wise)
And most importantly, his first command

I still couldn't resist from telling him (over a pint) "Your not forgetting the fact you can bring her home with you on a trailer and keep her in your bath when your not at work" :)

Joking aside, I'm very proud of him and I know my father (an AB in the merchant navy during WWII) will also be ever so proud of his grandson.

It's good to see young James is keeping busy and has a few " Irons in the fire."While it's easy to be pessimistic about the cruise industry and economy as a whole. UPDATE:

Well, life on the puddle jumper didn't last all that long. A month or so ago James suffered a minor back injury and the replacement skipper arrived for a period of a week. James recovered and on returning, the usual handover was conducted between both skippers, during which a senior company figure arrived unannounced.

The senior company figure berated the relieving skipper claiming the vessel was not keeping up with the work schedule and said that future improvements were needed if he was to get more work from the company in the future. The relieving skipper responded by telling the senior company figure to stick his job where the sun doesn't shine and promptly picked his bags up and left the ship.

Shortly after James (he assures me in a polite manner) told the senior company figure that he would appreciate it if he was never to be addressed in what he thought was such an unprofessional way.

The response went something along the lines of "I'll speak in whatever tone I feel is appropriate and that is my right as a manager in my position"

That played on James mind for the next fortnight whilst at work and upon returning home he confided in me and my response was quite candid "Do you like your job?" James said "Yes but I'd hate to think this manager would ever talk to me like that" My response "If he did, simply tell him you are in charge of the vessel and have him leave immediately then phone head office and tell them you'll be going shoreside within the next twenty four hours, so they have fair warning to get a replacement skipper"

I thought nothing more of it but obviously James did because last week he arrived at our (parents) house to announce he had applied for and been offered a First Officer position with Stena Line.

I said "But that's a demotion son" and James response was "Actually, it's a little more money than the job on the puddle jumper and a commitment to a Captains position as and when a vacancy comes up plus the fact it being a ferry I'll always be in UK waters and it is still two weeks on and two weeks off. The only perk I'm losing is the loss of a hire car so I'll be driving my own to and from the job but the mileage allowance is pretty good"

I asked what the company response was when he rang them to resign the puddle jumper position and he replied "They said they didn't want to lose me and asked if I received an apology would that change my mind" His response was "Would that mean a change of senior manager?" There response "Not necessarily so" So James said "Just accept the resignation then"

If you've kept up this far I'll thank you for your time and finish by saying....you spend a fair portion of your life bringing up your kids and you like to think you know everything about them. James being no exception, I knew how determined and professional he is at work and the rise in ranks over the years proves that but I never realised he had the same stubbornness and fire in his belly that his father and my father had.

His new vessel is the MS stena Superfast VIII and is currently running regular daily schedules between Belfast and Cairnryan.

I received a PM from one of our forum members overnight which ended "How 'bout a post on your son's career? It's been awhile."

Fair enough then....James commenced his latest position as a Pilot on the River Tees approximately just over a year ago and he is thoroughly enjoying the experience. The River Tees is massive traffic-wise compared to the River Tyne and the hours can be long but on the plus side the pay is quite a bit more than he has ever been on and even more importantly he is happy.

The job has six career grades/increments for advancement up the pay scales to the eventual summit of Harbour Master. These grades/increments take the form of exams and experience via number and size of vessels navigated in and out of port.

James passed the third test last week so is well on course (no pun intended) to achieve his ultimate goal.

On a humorous note: He informed me he met a ship a couple of miles offshore which required navigating into port and upon arrival and entering the vessels bridge he realised the captain and others on watchg were all under the influence of drink or drugs. He availed himself of the gadgetry fitted into his survival coat (these cost almost £2000 so must have some state of the art kit in them) and within an hour the captain and a couple of his officers noticed they were being closely followed by a police launch to which one of them said "Oh look, we must be extremely important"

Coming into port and nearing the ships berth there were a couple of police vehicles and James told me they then started to realise what was about to happen.

James said nothing and left the vessel at the earliest opportunity.

Well done son.

I'll bet the inebriated captain and his Motley Crüe were really "Tee'd off" upon being apprehended by their pilot! (No pun(s) intended... but then I'm just Teesing!):O: I'm particularly relieved to hear of Jame's state-of-the-art vest. Some years ago a veteran SF pilot clambering onto an inbound vessel was lost in heavy seas off the Golden Gate's notorious Hell's Gate...and not found. Haven't updated this thread for quite a while but knowing some of you on here have taken a genuine interest in my lads career I thought now was as good a time as any for an update.

James continues to progress in his role as a maritime pilot on the Tees and as such he is off to represent the UK Maritime Pilots Association by travelling to Brisbane, Australia on 17th in preparation for his role as UK representative at the Australation Maritime Pilots Institute conference at Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on 27th.

I presume your son have learn to navigate old style as well as with the new style.

Just watched an issue on my news channel and it was about Jamming the GPS in the Baltic sea and a Captain on a ferry, said that they had problem navigating due to misinformation from GPS.

My thoughts when watching it
-Well then skip the electronics and do it like they did 100 years ago.
