RSRDC: currently assign 'anti-shipping' mission, but don't know what is expected. one posting defined 'sink' mission, where one tags the mission icon and then one is released to go sink ships anywhere. tried tagging, but didn't get any other messages. can I go sink ships anywhere? have sunk two ships, only 7K tons, but still no message. So what is expected? thanks:subsim:

generally speaking 10k tons is the target.
I am playing RSRD also. I had an assignment, go to zone and stay there for 72 hrs. As soon as I was in the zone, that mission completed, and I was given the sink ships job. First ship I got was a large modern tanker. As soon as it sank, I got the mission completed check mark. Tanker listed as 10001 tons.

Looks like all you need is 3k more, and you don't have to stay in the designated area either.

When you get the mission, you also get a defined area to stay in, and a time to stay there. Word is that if you leave that 'zone' clock resets.
For example I have gotten: Go to within 150 NM of <zone> and stay for 96 hours. Also have had 100 nm, 72 hours. Sometimes message says to patrol, other times it says to sink ships.

Go back through your messages and look for the one that you received for this mission.

Real Fleet Boats and Run Silent Run Deep Campaign? correct? Were you supposed to stay within a given area for the mission? lurker used "anti-shipping" for a lot of his "patrol" type missions that would be assigned upon arrival at a location. There would usually be a statement to the effect "staying within 75 nuatical miles of co-ordinates xx and xx for 48 hours, then unrestricted" or something like that. ?? Go back to the location where you were assigned the mission, and hang around there for two or three days, unless you can see the original assignment on the clipboard, and see the "details". Usually, at the beginning of a patrol from home port, he'll give you a "Proceed immediately to co-ordinates xx and xx at most efficient speed and await further instructions", and when you arrive there, the actual assignment then pops up. That one usually has the details. If he says like "staying within xx nautical miles", draw yourself a circle on the map right there, making it a pinch less than what he said. Make a mental note of the time frame involved, and if any tonnage is listed. If you are like me, you'll have to write it down, so that you can then lose the note you've made... ahem... :roll: :yeah: Good luck, Skipper! :salute:

Yep, Propbeanie, I usually save when I get there with date & time, and how long to stay in the file name (like: P1 zone jan 6 1920 96hrs). I also make that Circle to show me where to stay.

So no clues there then? Another thing you could do, after saving and exiting, is to open the mission files in a text editor (do NOT use the ME, else you'll potentially ruin the file) - if you know for certain which ones they are - and look at what he has in there. You may find something like this in the TSR file:

[Text]
MissionBriefing=Proceed to a position 2400N 14500E by 150nm along the Japanese-Truk shipping lanes and conduct anti-shipping operations. Remain on station for 48hrs, however if IJN units are detected outside of the Patrol area, proceed at your discretion to intercept and destroy. Make reports to higher authority as necessary.
SinkShips=SinkShips
MissionTitle=mission title
MSG1=Establish a patrol line along the Japanese-Truk shipping lanes. Patrol area at your discretion, remain on station as long supplies are adequate.
JNtoTruk_2400N_14500E_150nm=Conduct Anti-Shipping ops along the Japanese-Truk shipping lanes

The "Mission Briefing" is what you see at the beginning. "Sink Ships" is the type of patrol. "Mission Title" isn't used in the campaign (that's what shows up on the Single Mission menu). MSG1 is what's "called" below in the "Trigger 1" and "Event 1" sections. The trigger "calls" the event, which displays the message. The last portion pertains to the Map Zone 17 section. The only areas of the MIS file that pertains to this portion:

[MapZone 17]
Name=JNtoTruk_2400N_14500E_150nm
Radius=278.000000
MaxHeight=1000.000000
MinHeight=-1000.000000
Long=17400600.000000
Lat=2881600.000000
Height=0.000000

...

[Objective 1]
ObjName=JNtoTruk_2400N_14500E_150nm
Obj=7
ObjType=0
RenownAwarded=0
AreaName=JNtoTruk_2400N_14500E_150nm
AreaType=0
Presence=1
Time=2880.000000

[Trigger 1]
TrigName=Finish Patrol
Type=2
ObjName=JNtoTruk_2400N_14500E_150nm
ObjState=0

[Event 1]
EventName=MSG1
Type=0
TriggersNo=1
Trigger1=Finish Patrol
RepeatedUntilReceived=true
Critical=false

I do not see a "true" mission objective, other than to arrive on station, and basically patrol or "anti-shipping operations" until you are out of supplies. I try no to run out of torpedoes before I say I'm out of supplies, because you just never know what you'll run into on the way home, and might need one or two in defense of your boat... That said, it's difficult to pass up some juicy targets encountered... All the rest of that MIS file is for other missions that are built the same way as this one, hence all the Map Locations that are in the file (22 of 'em). I would say that you have more than fulfilled the requirements of the original mission parameters, if they're like this one...

yea, for some reason I thought it was 3 days not 4 and missed x150 in mission orders. ended right at 96 hours. I noticed in those files that it talks about weather. is weather set for the mission area? it rained the whole four days and I wondered if that was part of the mission or some kind of seeding for bad weather. btw: weather report for the mission always said 'no rain'....

The weather in 99% of the MIS files, whether Campaign, Patrol or Mission, is set to do the "Default":

Fog=0
FogRand=0
Clouds=0
CloudsRand=0
Precip=0
PrecipRand=0
WindHeading=0
WindSpeed=5.000000
WindRand=0
WeatherRndInterval=5
SeaType=0

Several folks do use those settings in the Quick (Single) Missions to their advantage. cdrsubron7 is one.

The "0" (zeroes) above means nothing changes, the windspeed is "normal", and the Interval thingie is "stock". I've read all sorts of stuff on the "randomness" of the weather, and never retain hardly a bit of the information, other than, like a lot of "random" things in the game, it really isn't. In this case, the weather has an uncanny knack at getting "stuck", to where you might have the most beautiful looking weather conditions, with clear skies, no clouds and calm seas - perfect weather for everything except submarine operations. Three weeks later, you go from that into the typhoon to beat all typhoons, and it lasts for ten days, from Midway all the way to Honshu... There are some mods where pressing the <N> key will re-set the "random" of the weather, but not all of them. I do not recall if that works in Stock. Even after getting it to re-set, it can still get stuck... Four days is not that much really, except there usually isn't much change in intensity is there?...

It seemed to me that the rain got heavier at times, but weather report always reported 'no rain'. On the way back to base, Fremantle, the next day, turned into a gale. Now, weather report, say's 'heavy rain'. Next day, clearing skies and the next, clear skies all the way back. Odd.

Which reminds me. On the way back, ran into ship and gave chase. Did set up and fired two torps. Panicked when flag was not meatball, but Australian(?). Missed. If ship was hit, what happens? Was then really surprised when ran into another ship 100 miles north of Australia. It had a meatball and didn't miss.:subsim:

I forgot to mention that although it looks like its raining sometimes, the crew still isn't dressed appropriately on the deck, and now I've lost my "reference" link... ratz. Maybe someone will come along with more accurate info, but it has to do with the wind, if I'm remembering correctly. Real storms do ebb and flow over the course of time, so it sounds like your weather there was fine, other than you were told it wasn't raining, even though it looked like it was. That is a Stock game issue.

As for shooting at an Aussie vessel, they will sink if hit, just like other vessels. Some of the mods (Traveller's??) do have provisions for a subtraction of Renown points, but most don't. The incident is recorded in the log, and does contribute towards "disciplinary action", but so long as you sink tonnage (usually), you don't run into issues (also "usually"). There will be the occasional issue with promotions though, where you do well, and you end up being "retired" instead of getting a new boat, but that may or may not happen because of "collateral damage" done by you. The game also has its issues in that regard. Let's just say it's not advisable to sink a friendly...
