Mark Zuckerberg has revealed deep-seated concerns that the tide is turning against globalisation.

Or in short, losing money via members of FB dropping the app and moving on.

In an interview with the BBC, the Facebook founder said that fake news, polarised views and "filter bubbles" were damaging "common understanding".
He said people had been left behind by global growth, sparking demands to "withdraw" from the "connected world".

Why yes, what once was to be a family and friends type app has become anything but. More political crap and family/friends trying to sell me LuLaRue pants than I care to count. Filtering through the junk I found a picture of my friends dog. Time to dump the app.

In a call to action, he said people must not "sit around and be upset", but act to build "social infrastructures".

And my bank account so to buy an entire Hawaiian island.

"Now that vision is becoming more controversial."


No worries. You will survive on your billions.

He told the BBC: "There are people around the world that feel left behind by globalisation and the rapid changes that have happened, and there are movements as a result to withdraw from some of that global connection."

They survived before FB and will survive not being connected to hopefully a dying form of communication named Facebook.

Well, FB was great when first introduced. Find old friends and college buddies. Then it turns to finding old flames and ruining marriages. In the meantime it become a platform for friends and family to start selling crap. Every post becomes something they are selling. Real estate. LuLaRue Pants. Avon. Party Lite Candles. You get the idea. It is to the point FB is useless for keeping up with family and friends. And for good measure it becomes a soap box for getting the word out on a favorite candidate with associated bickering and dropping the friendship on FB. There..showed you. Unfriended my friend!:doh: All of this culminates with fake news that, well, Zuckerberg ignored as he purchased an entire neighborhood in Hawaii. Zuckerberg is instrumental in destroying the very "vision" he has for globalization. Withdraw from the connected world...sounds like a good idea because connecting like we humans have with FB sure the hell has not helped it much.

I'm getting stamps. Expect a letter.

Is he even 35 yet? I dunno. While I won't disagree with what you're saying AVG, It's good to see people with the means trying to do good.

Look at a bunch of the other douches of his generation with similar funding, and what they're doing. That guy that raised the price on that one drug? How many other 'playboys' out there just soaking it in, not doing anything with it.

I can see Zuckerberg eventually becoming what Bill Gates is today. The Gates Foundation does wonderful work all over the world.

But I agree in general with Facebook, I feel my IQ being dragged down as I read it. I've been on it maybe 3 times since September, and I'm starting to get a bunch of those annoying emails again. Each time I block and unsubscribe, but I get daily emails about other peoples random postings.

The Nerdist Podcast (http://nerdist.com/nerdist-podcast-bill-gates/) (hosted by Chris Hardwick) interviewed Bill Gates about the foundations work. It is a 60-90 minute interview that was very enlightening. He even got to ask him about the famous "64k of RAM should be enough for anybody" quote.

RadioLab (http://www.radiolab.org/story/trust-engineers/) did a really good analysis on some of Facebooks more (in)famous social engineering projects. It was a very good listen and explained a lot of the background stuff you didn't hear in the main stream media.

Maybe there is some kind of cultural thing but none of my friends is using FB for selling stuff on their page. If they do they use groups created for that purpose.

What however annoys me a lot is FBs way of inserting advertisement into status update stream. Fine. My friend likes Coca Cola's FB page. Thats wonderful, but I don't need to know that every damned time I log in and no I'm not interestid in reading/watching their latest ad. Oh and no, I'm not going to like them too, no matter how many times you beg for it!

Also for thousanth time I don't want to know the ultra secret (from who?), guaranteed to work (how?) way for winning in Texas Hold'em...

Although I have both VK and FB I don't really use either (well I sort of do use VK to watch pirated videos sometimes).

The social media that I use the most is LJ and I visit this forum because it is one of the most sensible forums I have ever seen.

It can often be an uphill battle but I find giving extra attention to the filter settings does away with a lot of the crap and to be totally honest, FB is a handy mobile means of killing those boredom moments in life.

Maybe I'm doomed afterall and haven't yet realised :hmmm:

But, is Zuckermen qualified to "do good" concerning globalization? He designed a program that more then likely was to keep in touch with his friends. It move to others using it and on it's own merits at the time went global. In short, it became something that it was not intended from inception. Nothing against Zuckermen, he has cut a check or two for certain causes. And definitely, like Gates with billions that one could not spend in a lifetime, it is nice to see the monies go to good causes.

I see FB slowly losing it following. Another form will come along Google Friends never got off the ground really as the gorilla(FB) in the room it was not possible. We will wait and see. Currently, for me anyway, FB is getting to be more of a chore than program for staying connected.

It is not a cultural thing concerning selling. These are home based business' that friends and family get involved in. They use FB to peddle their wares. Gets tiresome.

It is a great time killer certainly. FB does keep me connected to friends I associate with in the antique car world. It is the other muddled junk that I have to sift through to get to these posts.

And I might say, the UNFOLLOW feature on FB is my friend. It quietly allows me to stop seeing the nonsense from friends and family I don't care to see. So, I clicked on all I wanted to unfollow. I was left with my own posts and my wife's recipes posts. :)

Of course, the world isn't going to get any bigger, so sooner or later people are going to have to realise that globalisation isn't going away, no matter how many people reject it. It's like trying to undo the Industrial Revolution, you can't.

We already have globalization to a very large extent. However, is it a good thing? The current atmosphere in the US is one of isolationism. At least that is how I perceive it. Zuckerman states some pulled back from lack of being connected and also fake news. Of course this stemming from getting pinned with allowing fake news to permeate FB.

It's a double-edged sword, no doubt about it, on the one hand it's given us a lot of things, the internet, cheaper holidays, cheaper food...but on the other it's also helped increase the gap between the richest and poorest, and I think that's part of the push-back we're seeing in the isolationist stance that some people are taking because they feel that they've been left behind, and of course, another by-product of globalisation is that it's a lot easier now to see how the other half live, and to organise expressions of discontent.
Of course, the situation is not going to be improved by isolationism, because aircraft will still fly, the internet will still bring instantaneous communication between people, we will always want things better, faster, cheaper, this is the driving force of humanity. Only...we're heading into a time when the things that will make everything better, faster and cheaper are also going to make vast swathes of humanity unemployed, and our current economic system is just not designed to cope with this, and at the moment we have no answers, and that's kind of terrifying.
