View Full Version : Recommend me great WWII Pacific movies...
I have realized that I've seen not many great movies about the WWII Pacific theater, with a strong focus on naval aspects and a realistic, history settings.
My favorite is Tora, Tora Tora although the focus is not so on the navy. Midways is also good but are there other great ones, especially about submarine and non-carrier engagements ?
Thanks...

This is a very old thread, but it should have more than enough to keep you occupied for some time.

There's one movie I never mentioned and that is "Torpedo Run" starring Glenn Ford. :D
USS Seaviper. In September 1944 one of the Navy’s wolf pack submarines called USS Seaviper is sent on a secret rescue mission searching for downed pilots and discovers German and Japanese troops together on an island in the Pacific.

Das Boot is the gold standard in WWII sub movies.
Run Silent Run Deep is probably the best with a US perspective.
Submarine Command (1951) Starring William Holden is pretty good for its era. Anything with William Bendix in it is worth an extra *
I thought it was better than oft-mentioned Crash Dive (1943)
As to Post WWII...
K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) is great but NOT WWII fare.
Hunt For Red October is better but also not WWII

Probably anything is better than Crash Dive. I originally made a thread about that movie and praised it highly - as a joke. I feel that movie is worth owning only for the live color scenes of an S-boat backing away from a pier and for early 77-foot Elco PT boats.
Then again there are so many movies I haven't seen there may be one worse.
I have to add Crimson Tide, this sub movie is a great movie too.

we got a little away from the topic ;) but doesn't matter...
I have high hopes for Greyhound (http://www.imdb.com/news/ni60244049/), especially since Tom Hanks is a great actor. (But don't know if it will be in the Pacific/Atlantic)
But yes, apart from that the Hunt for Red October is also my all time naval movie and the only one which I know, which depicts to a given degree modern sensors (waterfall display etc.) and ASW tactics.
My dream naval movie would be RedStormRising and playing on the Chicago but I know I'll never see that :/
UPS sorry  Forgot you asked for WWII related sub movies.
