View Full Version : Moving in the Interior

I'm trying to determine what key commands allow me to move forward and back in the control room and conning tower. I'm using jimimadrid's SH_Keymapper v1.01 and looking at the SH4 Stock version of the commands.cfg file.

The Up arrow has two commands assigned: "To-up" and "Move-forward". When I hit the Up arrow, my view shoots to the overhead; I don't move closer to the far side of control.

I would think the "Move-forward" command is the right one, but it isn't getting me where I want to go.

What am I missing? Any suggestions are welcome and thanks in advance.

I presume you're using SH4 v1.5 UBM, but do you have any mods installed?

Yes, SH4 v1.5 with no mods.

I'm trying to keep it simple to diagnose why the commands aren't working the way I expect them to work. Once I get the commands right, I want to import that commands.cfg file to my SH4 game with various mods.

If I'm remembering correctly (yikes!), that's the way "Stock" does. The up arrow moves your perspective up, not forward, because I don't think you can wander the interior the way you can with some of the mods.

Thanks propbeanie, that might be it. I'm able to wander in TMO, but when I added the Spyron mod to a clean install of the stock version, I lost that ability.

I may have to live with it.

Yeah, just imagine yourself glued to the chart table, and only able to grab the periscope (which is difficult to do from the chart table...) to change your view perspective, other than looking at the piping on the ceiling, or the floor, where you HAVE NO FEET!!! Someone will have to carry you to the bridge, and then throw you back down the hatch when you go to dive...

Webster made a simple mod you might like. It allows free-cam in the interior and you can move closer to the displays up in the CT. The Arrow keys perform most of the movement of the cam.

Furthermore you would like (I think) the exterior cam. you can move in from aircraft 700' height views to to a foot away from any ship or even your sub with the exterior cam.

It is in the downloads section, and it is called:
Webster's Free Camera and Scope Fix for v1.4 and v1.5

Best of all, this little mod corrects the exterior views for the periscope so you can have a true perspective.

Webster made numerous mods that you might like. In the Downloads section type "Webster" in the search bar and a large list should appear for you to skim through full of mods that you may find helpful.

Webster's Ship Manuvering Fix may be of interest too. It changes the physics of the enemy DD's etc to prevent those unrealistic jack rabbit starts and stops they use to avoid your perfectly aimed torpedo.

Happy Hunting!

Thanks very much, aanker. I began playing SH4 six years after Webster made those mods, so I wasn't aware of them. I downloaded about a dozen of his small mods and will add them after I get the interior movement fixed.

Reporting back.

Webster's Free Camera and Scope Fix for v1.4 and v1.5 did not enable to me to move closer to the control room displays. If I'm reading Webster's Readme file correctly, this mod only alters the exterior camera capabilities and I don't play with the exterior camera enabled.

Upside, this mod definitely helps with the periscope magnification.

If anyone knows of another mod that enables free movement in the control room with the SH4 stock version, please post your suggestion.

You can take the camera file used in TM 2.5 and replace the stock camera file.

If you want to try that, the camera.dat file is located in the Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific\Data\Library.

I used that solution in the stock version before because of the inability to move about the sub, and it worked. Just be sure to save your original camera.dat file somewhere.

This is probably the best solution if Ducimus corrected the periscope and TBT views. His interior free cam works.

Did you try Shift + F2 to get Free roam camera inside the Sub with Websters mod? In the Control Room the small deep depth gauge will fill up your screen with the interior Free cam. Plus you can go through the hatch by the aft Nav table and go up into the Conning Tower and get up close to anything you want. Not as easy as going to the station and pushing an arrow.

Thank you Factor. I will try the TMO camera.

Also, thanks aanker. I missed the fact Shift+F2 enables the control room free roaming camera. I never saw that command in the long list of available commands in jimimadrid's SH_Keymapper program and it works just as you wrote above. This is a viable option, especially if I can't get the TMO camera to work.

With Shift f2, I don't think you get the pitch and roll physics of the submarine. Just a static free camera view inside the boat. If I remember...

This did not work. I am not able to move around using the up and down arrow keys as I am able to do using TMO. Odd.

Shift + F2 does work well.

Thanks again, Factor. This mod worked just fine.

Good to hear. The problem with using Shift f2, is you lose the interior movement of the submarine. Ruins the immersion. :Kaleun_Wink:
