Hi,
spad here,
I'm a returning SH IIIer from way back, I haven't played for ages for various reasons but I'm back again (once hooked there's no escape). The last time I played I tried to play with the Grey Wolves Gold expansion but I could never get it to work properly, it always seemed buggy but I realise that could be down to my installation incompetence. I would like to mod my SH III but thought I would ask you guys first before I try anything so I would like to ask:-
Which mod(s) would you recommend
Which mod(s) are compatible with each other
Whats the best installation sequence/procedure and the best place to get the mods from.
Thanks in advance for your help, I'm looking forward to meeting you all and becoming a member of your community,
cheers,:Kaleun_Salute:

Welcome spad, while I have no experience modding sh3 or modding experience period, there are plenty of folks on here that can help you, I think in sh3 case you should talk to the Berbster, if that how you spell his name, I know for sure that rockin robbin in the guy to talk to about sh4 but you don't need that. And if all else fais just look through the forums here, literally hundreds of post on here center around sh3 and modding. Your in good hands, welcome aboard and happy hunting good sir.

Welcome to Subsim Spad. :sunny: GWX 3.0 is a great add on. If I were going to Install SH3 and Mod it. I would try this.

1. Install SH3 and the 1.4 patch if you have an earlier game. 1.4 isn't needed on later games.

2. Run starforce removal tool if you have an earlier game. To check if you have starforce, Right Click on My Comp and go to properties .
Select device manager from the hardware tab
From the view menu ” Show Hidden Devices “
Under the nonplug and play device , check whether starforce is there or not

If present, use removal tool. you can get it here. http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55 or look up ( sfdrvrem.exe. ) I run the Starforce removal tool regardless.

3. Install GWX or the mega mod of your choice. Keep in mind the mega mod like GWX are installed in the game folder while the other mods are enabled / activated through JSGME. Make copies of your mods and keep them in a separate drive or folder because once installed in JSGME, they can't be removed although the mods themselves can be enabled /disabled at will. If your computer goes down or the files are corrupted, you have backups which are a good idea for any files anyway. It's also important not to Install GWX or SH3 itself into the default path but use a separate game folder or even the desktop if needed.

These procedures are for Windows Vista and above. Windows XP seems to be unaffected. Linux is another matter entirely. As mentioned, Rockin Robbins is our resident expert on all things Linux.

There are files that I can't find at the moment to allow SH3 to be played without the DVD in the computer. This saves wear and tear on your disc.

As far as the Mods enabled through JSGME, some mods will interfere with each other and some not. JSGME will inform you if some mods are compatible or not with others. You then have the choice to disregard and install the mods anyway or not to install the mod or disable the mod that is incompatible. It's a trial and error kinda proposition. I think any mods that make the game more immersive are good. They can de divided into sound, appearance and mechanic mods.

I hope this information gets you started. As Redwake and U Crank have already said, look through the forums or ask our members here for assistance.

Again, welcome aboard, enjoy your time here and happy hunting and the best of the holidays to you. :)
