A mere two weeks away!
It is warm here in Texas, about 67F (19C), though we had a nice cold spell last week, it did not last.
I spent Thanksgiving in Dallas with daughter #2 so I will stay here and spend Christmas with daughters 1 & 3 and the folks. Will be a nice 3 day weekend, I hope it snows (but I doubt it will).
We all agreed this is no-gift Christmas, so I have no stress or expenditures to ruin the holiday. We're going to make tasty Christmas dishes, watch Dr Who and MST3K, and play games.
What are your plans? Spending time with the family?

We decided to ditch the gift-giving too (except for our son) as it does mean a lot of stress and spending a lot of time over something that is over so quickly, and isn't really that important to making Christmas special.
Just us three at home and a visit to the in-laws at some point.

Quite looking forward to it (Christmas), we are having the daughter and fiance round for dinner then off to the wife's brothers house for the evening.
Boxing day will just be the wife and I for the first time.
Only downside being, James will be island hopping around the Carribbean but we are content in the knowledge he enjoys his work and there is the usual huge festive itinerary planned on his ship which he always looks forward to.

Will be visiting with my sister and her family on Christmas Eve, but on Christmas Day will be home by myself. Kids and grandkids live too far away for us to be together on the holiday, too hard for people to be off from work at the same time. But will spend a lot of time talking with them all on the phone, so that is something anyway.
I've always enjoyed Christmas before, but the older I get, it doesn't have the same excitement as it used to when the kids were small and at home, and the wife was still alive. But must make the best of it I guess.

Family Christmas party the 17th. The 25th we stay home(me, the missus and daughters) and exchange gifts. From then on it Christmas Story repeated on the boob tube all day, ham for dinner and simply just enjoying the day.

Kind of puts things Chrismas-wise into perspective.
A US man who dresses up as Santa Claus fulfilled a dying boy's Christmas wish by visiting him at his bedside, before the youngster passed away in his arms.

I agree.
Surviving and paying bills is far more important to me than spending money I don't have on this commercial dribble, debt is a real thing and not something that comes out a cracker.

Christmas is not supposed to be commercial and spending. Man has made it that way. St Nicholas as I'm told. Christmas has become over-commercialized.
Christmas has become over-commercialized.
I Agree 100%
Going to spend the Christmas evening and the following two days alone with my cat. Then I'm going to be with my Mom, little sister and my niece for three days thereafter.
About spending money on Christmas present. I save little money each month throughout the year, so I don't have to dig deep into my pocket when Christmas approach. In our family we have come to an agreement that no more than 300 Dkr per person shall be given. And only to those we are spending Christmas with.

And it has lost that true meaning for some. Some do not have a clue at all but run up the credit card anyway because it's "Christmas".

Agreed. Christmas is only commercial if you make it that way. So make it a time of friendship, good cheer, fellowship, and pleasant times.

Little different Christmas for us this year. Son, his wife and our new granddaughter will go to Ontario to be with her parents. So my daughter, our 16 year old grandson, wife and I are going to Orlando for a week. No presents just fun and relaxing. Got a place with a pool and I plan on making good use of it. :D

I like the spending time with family and friends and celebrating the season. I like the gift giving part, but don't like shopping. To those who mention going into debt for Christmas presents. A long time ago, I made a vow to not go into debt for Christmas. I haven't gone into debt for Christmas my entire adult life. I have on rare occasion used a credit card, but I made sure the money was set aside.

Yes, my family has been doing the no gift Christmas thing for several years now. We enjoy Christmas much more when it's about getting family together and celebrating being on the green side of the grass together!:D:D:D

My x mas is gonna consist of turning 26 and spending time with the wife and two kids, she's big on gifts for everyone, I had told don't get me anything so the kids could get more....she still got me stuff of course lol. My plan for x mas is watch the kids loose it over new toys then fire up the fireplace and enjoy a nice brew while I get nice and toasty lol.

Dear Neal
I am glad you are going to have a nice christmas with your family. I have a small family here in California and some more relatives in Georgia but both side of the family get together with our local relations. We may be far away from our family but we will be close in our hearts.
I WANT TO WISH ALL SUBSIMMERS MERRY CHRISTMAS or for our members overseas HAPPY CHRISTMAS.

This is really a very sad story and yet it's great that Eric Schmitt-Matzen felt it was important enough to rush to the hospital and the young boy's side. I did story a year ago about a gentleman who dressed up as batman to visit very ill children. This gentleman passed away in a car accident on the way home from the hospital after visiting a very ill child.
Thanks for posting the story.
I'm glad most will spend the holidays with family and friends and to that end, I hope everyone has a great day. I will have the chance to see people I rarely get to see and so will just enjoy seeing everyone.

For the first time in decades, I (or better meanwhile we) will not have to drive a long distance to celebrate Christmas, since my mother is now in a nursing home nearby. So we can pick her up and celebrate at our home :)

Now that milady is gone I am left with her Scrooge of a son who is more worried about the electric bill than keeping me warm and comfy.
Not that I really care about catching my death, It will only put milady and I back together a little sooner and leave the tightwad scrambling to pay the bills.:haha:
At any rate, I wish all my friends here a happy holiday and a prosperous new year.:salute:

Hey seeing you and Vendor check in makes it Christmassy; now where's Armistead? We're in a giftless Christmas mode this year still camped in a back bedroom as the wife's new kitchen remodel gets completed....all December long! so we're not even putting up the customary decorations or a tree. :k_confused: The temps are in the 40's and the rain has been incessant for a week-good news is: the California drought is not such a big deal these days!

Christmas means most pleasurable childhood and youth memories for me, and that is what makes this time special to me. My Mum and my Dad did their best to create a most "gemütliches" home and we had always beautiful, though tasteful, trees, and candle lights distributed around the place. Thats what makes it so special to me - the memories, the family traditions. The meaning of Christmas does no longer connect with us since we all are atheists, but still we respect people trying to make this time something special for their families or kids, and hold it in high value.
Its also the reason why we turn angry over the over-commercialisation of it. The last years, christmas decorations and candies showed up in supermarkets and storehouses already at the end of July. :timeout: Thats some distortion that I really get furious about. This year at least it was about September until they rolled out the Santa Claus parade. Still way too early, if you ask me. No christmas stuff until 5-6 weeks before Holy Night, that should be a legal limit.
This business frenzy of hopelessly exaggerated longer-earlier-more, really has done severe damage to what I recall to have been something precious, and beautiful, and heart-warming. And I intend to not forgive them that.
---
If you happen to be in Lübeck on Christmas night, make sure you pick up your spouse or family for a midnight walk in the small streets of the old town, or along one of the two rivers that embrace the old town and make it an island effectively, do it when the midnight matters begin. You have five huge churches with seven huge towers and all of them having very impressive and huge bells - all concentrated in a very limited space and a very atmospheric old town. When they start their toll, the air is vibrating in all of the old town, no matter where you are, and you feel a sound massage all on and over your body. Unforgettable.

This Christmas weather in North Virginia is starting to piss me off. Cold, warm, cold, warm. Not only did it mess up my batch of Kambucha, today it is raining so I can't take the dogs to the park. Do you have any idea how much my dogs look forward to going to the park????

Kissimmee? If they're still operating check Warbird Adventures. You used to be able to pay to ride and actually take the stick and fly a T6 Texan. They also had several planes undergoing restoration. Last I saw was a B-17, fw190 a-8, f4u b-25 mitchell and some others.
