Ahoy from Beerhunter623!!! I'm very pleased to be a member here at SUBSIM.
I bought SH5 last evening and spent all night downloading it (i dont know what time it finished, I was asleep) and all morning getting it started. So now, I'm stuck under that acursed red-light so I cant see sh*t. According to the game, I'm supposed to move straight ahead ascend a ladder to talk to my captain in the bridge. I'm glad he's turning out to b the patient type, 'cuz I' can't find my way.
Anybody care to give me a hand?

well...i found my captain...and he's dead......no im kidding, i havent found him yet...i did, however, find a ladder that led to a tiny room above the navigator containg the periscope with the bicycle seat...but the room is uninhabited and the periscope does nothing although my cursor does turn into a pointing finger but does NOTHING...i hope i can find herr kapitan soon, im getting bored and frustrated...i think ill watch an episode of dexter and then come back

btw, berbster...thx for all the info, but holy cow, its like trying to take a drink off of a fire hydrant

well, if anyone's interested, I found Herr Kapitan...I didn't realize that the small platform above the sail was known as "the bridge" and I accidentally ordered the boat to submerge while he was still up there. You figure the computer would be smart enough to get him below decks as the boat is submerging rather than making him swim home to germany.
Also, I found out the hard way that 1. theres no one on the bridge to man the deck gun unless the mission calls for it (probably the same for the flak gun too) and 2. the Ostsee is REALLY big and if you dont know entirely how to navigate, you'll NEVER find what youre looking for (and the Atlantic is MUCH bigger.)

Note also that in rough seas, you will be told that you cannot man the deck gun :)
