hello all. i'm late to the party but i made it ;)

Destroyers are giving me grief. I hate them. So, there we have it.

Here's a little context: i use version 1.5, uboat expansion with TriggerMaru_Overhaul_2-5.
I am perfectly able to line up a shot on moving targets and hitting them so that's not why i'm here.

When i engage a destroyer class boat, they simply accelerate and my torpedos miss, absolutely 100% hits normally . sure, they see them incoming and think, sod this, im out.

i've had some luck with spreading and managed to accidently hit a few as they accelerate. Its especially bad when they are travelling really slow.

So, how do you actually kill them?.

You read a lot of Rambos telling your that you should be sinking all the escorts, then take the convoy at your leisure. In TMO, that is a sure prescription to be out of torpedoes with no sinkings to your credit. Even if you succeed DDs don't count for any tonnage since they don't weigh anything.

But in TMO, even a down the throat at full throttle with a stern shot is only a 50/50 proposition. Shooting escorts is a great way to waste torpedoes.

So I waste escorts by sinking all the merchies and watch them wander away like little puppy dogs that lost their bones.

cheers.

i gather from your reply you find it equally difficult and it's working as intended and it's not because im doing it wrong.

thx :)

RR is right Teefy, it's not worth it to go after a DD unless you really have to. I have had to sink one now and then to get out of a tight spot, but I don't go looking for trouble. I got one yesterday because it came across my bow at 600 yds while I was finishing off a Huge European Liner I had disabled.

Bottom line: go for the merchants, evade the DD's

Happy hunting

so, you were cornered and had no choice.

100% correct. Even when multiple DDs are hunting you and one is customarily stopped listening while the others drop presents to you, unless it's night or very rough, shooting at the parked one isn't very successful.

TMO is purposely made to keep you from being Rambo. DDs are not cooperative targets and should be evaded when possible. Your experience is totally valid.

Now, in spite of that, in the Fall of the Rising Sun Ultimate project, we are working to reduce the acceleration of DDs so that they can't be at 30 knots in half a boat length. We call this feature Anti-Jackrabbit.

how did you do it ? at night? rough sea? Yes usually at night (trying to sneak back out of a port, or something like that).
As always, stealth and surprise are important, but if I can't get those, sometimes running away from them(they are directly behind) and trying a stern tube shot at their bow has worked, but NEVER guaranteed.

Again as many say: Taking on a DD is a last-resort option.

I got one yesterday because it came across my bow at 600 yds while I was finishing off a Huge European Liner I had disabled. This particular DD was just blind, stupid luck. I was set to shoot at the liner, stuck up the scope, and there was DD. Used another torp still at default (5') and got him. I hadn't even thought of going for any of the 4 DD's.
