Have been watching episodes of silent service and it seems to me that
they used the surface radar a lot. Isn't this a bit reckless because of
the risk of detection.

The position, course and speed of every single friend or foe on the battlefield. You instantly know when they change course and what course and speed they changed to. You know the range and bearing to every target to within 15 yards regardless of range.

They know:


Somebody out there somewhere is running some kind of radio equipment on frequencies we think are American radar.
That's only if they have radar detection equipment, which was only kept on a minority of warships.

I am going to keep that bastard running unless I am underwater.

If it's nighttime I will go to radar depth just to I can keep it on.
