Hope anyone who is in the path of this one has gotten well away from the coast. If it continues on its projected path, this could be a really bad one, skirting the coast from West Palm Beach, Florida all the way up to NC.

Matthew is at the moment a bit unpredictable. The latest computer and ensemble models have it looping clockwise and back accross Florida. Ensemble is parroting the GFS model which is comparable to UKMET longrange forecast both have been very accurate in past seasons. Time will tell. One thing is for sure if it does skirt Hatteras and heads out to sea. Fishing is gonna be good where Im at!

If, as predicted here on Danish weather news, take the Atlantic course it will go down to a 2nd
Wonder if Matthew will grow if it turned left and toke a tour over the Mexican Golf ? going form a 3 or 4 to a 4 or 5

If you heard on the news we had rather a nasty storm here in South Australia less than a week ago. We had a small tornado go through our place, was the most frightening thing I've ever been through. I was caught outside when it hit, all I could do was cringe against the wall and pray!! The roar was deafening a mixture of wind, breaking tree branches, and various items breaking/falling apart!! We were without power, phones etc for over 24 hours, rather isolated here. I was amazed that an antenna mounted on 2" water pipe bent, the mast head broke off. Some of the roof iron was torn off the verandah, one tree was blown over with the roots now in the air with a large clump of soil, naturally it had to fall on a fence!!
My wife's poor garden built under a tree is badly damaged but the tree is smashed. We had 3 antennas up, all have been bent over.:o
Could have been a lot worse though, at least the house is ok.
It's gonna take a while to clean up the mess and repair the damage!:wah:
This is the first time a cyclone has hit the SA coast, IIRC 22 electricity towers were flattened. Crazy weather!!

It looks like my family and myself are going to be in the thick of it being to the north of West Palm Beach. We're as prepared as we can be and this is going to be our first experience with a hurricane. I got called into work today and it was a madhouse with lots of people getting last minute supplies like water, batteries, bread and so on. The store ran out of water within one hour or so of getting another nine pallets in and more are expected tonight or really early tomorrow morning.

Hearing from you guys here on the forum, it really brings it home. We're relieved it's not us, but we're listening to the news bulletins and hoping you all get through okay.
Yes as they say "Batten down the hatches"!!
Yeah, this one looks beastly alright, I doubt the loop scenario will happen...but I guess it's not out of the question, I've not heard of any hurricanes in recent years doing such a thing. :hmmm:
EDIT: Upon further research I found that Hurricane Jeanne in 2004 performed a loop, so there's that example I guess.

We just go the bit of rain from the outer bands about ten minutes ago. The local news is saying that the storm will go from a category 3 to a category 4 sometime between today and tomorrow and the likely track for this storm is it will loop back towards us after the weekend.

Odd how the young and aged both think they're invincible. :)

One thing that I still marvel at is the accuracy of long range hurricane prediction, the computer modeled paths; when I was young there was nothing like this. Meteorologists would make guesses but hurricanes were noted for being unpredictable.

I told my mom she should probably leave the area which incidently is the projected landfall. But like a true Floridian she just shrugged and said its not her first storm and she aint movin'. I told her that this might sound weird but I dont think I would do any different.
Ah well. I think its going to stay off shore anyway.

Yeah we're planning on staying put, the other plan would be to go to my grandparents house (they have storm shutters while most of the townhouses and apartments in the development where we live do not), and we are about six miles or so from the coast. In two to three hours is when the wind and rain are really supposed to pick up. The hurricane is expect to be closer to the coast around midnight tonight. I'll try to update when I can, but any time after three o' clock eastern the chances of power loss increase and we don't have a generator.

Looking at the other models Im thinking sustained hurricane force winds will remain offshore. Its gonna be close though which is why I think NWS has no other alternative but to adjust the forecast track to the westward most model.

Might be a problem but its moving fairly fast and the majority of winds will most likely have a westerly component which might tame that surge a bit.

Can tell you my Mom have been a witness among some few others to see a Tornado grow and do some damage right outside her Kitchen windows
From what I remember(been some decades ago) It was in the autumn, it was cloudy and windy, when the sky suddenly turned very dark and violet. My Mom went to the window to see what it was and she saw something that looked like a funnel starting from the sky and down and from the ground something similar arose and they meet in the middle and then this tornado made its 10 second mayhem - drew up a tree, destroying some things in a playground,
We was told, this, what my Mom and others had been witness to, is so rarely, not many people living ind Sweden have seen this(I lived in Sweden at that time)

Tornadoes are fairly common across Europe but usually not to the intensity that is seen in the US, where specific climatic conditions mean that the area is ripe for severe storms. Other places do have similar spots, the whole of the Phillipines is quite an active area, and the Pampas area of Argentina, and Eastern India and Bangladesh.
I was lucky enough to see a waterspout spin up and then rope out a few weeks ago, quite spectacular and one from my bucket list. Wouldn't mind seeing a plains tornado from a safe distance, but that's not likely to happen.
I imagine that Matthew will probably drop a series of waterspouts and tornados along its path too. Hurricanes like to do that.

Update as of 3:30 Eastern.
The winds here have been increasing since my second post and there's some slight rain but it's no worse then right now then some thunderstorms I've seen in the past. Matthew is still moving to the northwest at 14 miles per hour with sustained winds of 132.34 mph with landfall expected around 1:00AM eastern time, with the eye of the storm pass within a few miles or so of where I live. Right now the eye of the storm is between Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas.

Update: 7:04PM Eastern.
Had up to seven power blips between 4:30 to 5:00pm, not actual power outages but rather 1-2 second delays just long enough to mess up the clock on the microwave and shut off the TV. Just had our first major rain a few minutes ago, the first we've had here all day and the winds are still getting stonger. Now there's a couple of concerns for fellow Subsimmers up in North Carolina and Virginia, with Matthew moving up the Florida coast there is also hurricane Nicole, a Cat 1 which is moving NNW at 7 mph and is to the south of Bermuda, so be warned there's the chance, it might be a slim chance however of getting hit with two hurricanes in that region although NOAA is forecasting that hurricane Nicole is expected to slow down and meander. There is also a system to the northeast of Venezuela and NOAA is giving that system a less then 40% chance of becoming a tropical depression and/or storm.

How you doing, Kptlt. Neuerburg? Still connected? You should be getting a bit of wind now. Man, it looks ugly as hell, the models are showing the eyeholding H-force winds and riding right up the coast all the way to SC. When Cat 3 Ike rode into Galveston it was a direct hit and dissipated fairly quickly. Florida is going to get hit hard.

When I lived in Charleston the tourist industry commonly referred to anything in South Carolina near the ocean as "The Low Country". Which was to anyone living there just a romantic name for 'swamp". Doesnt take much.
Heard reports that Haiti death toll is now in the 800 area, not entirely surprised, they'd barely recovered from the quake six years ago and there was a cholera epidemic underway too. Poor sods.
Latest forecasts have Matthew spinning out to sea and possibly meeting up with Nicole who is just pottering around at the moment, the interaction between the two could make for an interesting study of the Fujiwhara effect. :yep:

Haiti you can expect nothing but the worst there. I remember visting in the 81 and 82 when Baby Doc was the president. Wether we entered Port au Prince, Cap Haitian or patrolled off shore the hills where thick with trees and vegetation, really a beautiful sight
Just a few short years later, 93 I think, we entered Port au Prince I was taken aback by what I saw. The landscape was barren and damn near every tree was gone. I can only imagine how many mudslides were caused by the hurricane, must have carried away whole villages.

My family and I as well as my grandparents are all safe and sound. We got very lucky last night as Matthew turned to the north rather then continue on it's predicted track or it would of been far worse then it was. We never lost power amazingly nor was there any damage, major or minor. The only thing we lost was the internet connection which went out around 8:00 last night and didn't come back on until almost 11:00 today. The wind last night was around tropical storm strength and Florida Light and Power did a really great job keeping the trees trimmed so there would be fewer problems with the power lines. NOAA is now predicting that Matthew will turn and head back towards the Bahamas, meanwhile Nicole has done a literal 180 and instead of heading north is now heading south towards Porto Rico and the island of St. Thomas so it well be an interesting time seeing what these two storms will do in the coming days.

Getting the tail end of Matthew today (Monday) in Eastern Canada. Heavy rains and very strong winds. We had the not so good fortune of traveling back from Halifax to P.E.I. this afternoon. What a trip. Slow and dicey, then we got to Confederation Bridge. No trucks or high sided vehicles and speed was restricted to 60 kph. Man it can get windy up there. Glad to report we made it home safe and sound. Had a great visit with son, daughter in law and that little grand daughter. Happy Thanksgiving (Canadian).:salute:
