View Full Version : Silent Hunter and Win 10
Howdy!
Probably a real strange question, but I just got a new computer using 64-bit Win 10. I used DosBox on my old comp to run Silent Hunter 1. Can you run SH 1 on Win 10? (Don't ask why, I just like the old game. :yeah:)

SH1 is a great game even with it's flaws.
Would make a great console game too :yep:
Howdy!
Thanks! I will check it out.
I Love the game, specially the campaigns with random scenarios. I have SH II but it doesn't compare.

Howdy!
Downloaded DosBox 0.74 that worked before with XP Pro on my old comp. Now, I can't get the game to load. 16 Bit and 64 Bit incompatible apparently. I tried to use DosBox to install the program but running into problems?
Am I screwed?

Believe me it works! You just have to adapt the DosBox a bit, or maybe it is even playable directly, adjusting the starting *.exe or *.com file via right-click and then compatibility..

Thread moved to a more appropriate area of the forum.
Yes SH1 1.31 & SHCE runs on Win 10, 8.1, & 7 - both 64 bit & 32 bit using DOSBox 0.74 plus all of Hawk's Utilities and Kim Ronhof's run too.
I use a zip file I made of my full install on a Win 3.11 or a Win ME computer years ago so I already have Hawk's Utilities set up and only need to configure DOSBox.
I've learned from others that Silent Hunter will install directly to Win 10, 8.1, & Win 7 - 64 bit & 32 bit computers which surprised me. I still use my zip.
Mine is installed (unzipped) to the C:\GAMES\SILENT folders I made.
You need to edit the *.ini files and copy the entire BUD folder over from the CD into the C:\GAMES\SILENT folder like this: C:\GAMES\SILENT\BUD
From subsowespac.org:

This post may help if you're installing the patches (not necessary if you have SHCE the Commanders edition:

From this topic mentioned above:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=213102
My simple SHCE desktop DOSBox shortcut is configured like this (the " quotes are needed):
Target:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74\DOSBox.exe" -userconf -c "mount c c:\games\silent" -c "c:"
Start in:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74"
I have Win 7 - 64 bit. If using 32 bit, DOSBox would be in C:\Program Files, not C:\Program Files (x86).
Be sure DOSBox Options are set to: fullscreen=true in the dosbox-0.74.conf file (1024x768)
Hope this helps.
Howdy Folks!
The problem is that I cannot even install the game. When I load the CD and start the install .bat file, an error message says the 16bit installer is not compatible with the 64bit version and can go no further. I even tried using DosBox to install it but no joy as you get "Cannot detect the CD" error message.
From what I have gleaned from some searches, the 16bit installer is not compatible with 64bit Win 10. I have spent the past hour looking at posts from various searches and the best I could come up with is you have to install a dual boot system on your computer with a second, 32bit OS to install the game. Apparently, MS abandoned all 16bit support due to safety concerns.
I am hoping we have some folks here that are more computer savvy than I that can come up with a simpler solution.

It sounds like you have an early release of Silent Hunter which does have a 16-bit DOS installer that will not function on 64-bit versions of Windows. I have such a version that has the CD-ROM volume label SH_V1_0_324. Unfortunately, many of the files in this version are compressed so there is no way to manually copy the disc contents into a functioning configuration on a hard drive.
You may see conflicting reports about the ability to install Silent Hunter into 64-bit versions of Windows because there ARE CD-ROMs with 32-bit Windows installers that will install correctly on 64-bit systems and put an entry into the list of installed programs. I have another Silent Hunter disc with a 1997 copyright date and a CD-ROM volume label SILENT that installs Version 1.0 properly on 64-bit systems. Silent Hunter Commander's Edition also has a 32-bit Windows installer as well. Of course the game's executable files are still 16-bit, so it will not run without the aid of something like DOSBox.
You may get better assistance with installation through DOSBox on the www.VOGONS.org (http://www.VOGONS.org) (Very Old Games on New Systems) site in the DOSBox subforum. The first thing to do is use the "60 seconds guide to getting your game to run in DOSBox" thread and make sure that you are getting the basics correct:
http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=8933
If that doesn't work, try posting in the VOGONS DOSBox Games/Apps subforum and be sure to include your exact commands and any error messages.
Good luck!
Howdy!
Oh yea, it's an old version: V1.0, copyright 1996. And my two patrol CDs are c1996 too.
I am familiar with DoxBox as I have used it with several other older games. I've used it to run games but never to install one. I'm not even sure if it's possible.
I'll check out the site you suggested and see what's there.
Thanks!

Well, you learn something new every day...... I wish I knew this around 2005 or so, it would have helped me help a whole lot of people - lol
We used the 'Don Wells' method back then on the XP systems and when Win 7 came out it was a completely new method to install SH1.
http://www.subsowespac.org/the-patrol-zone/silent-hunter-windows-vista-dosbox.shtml
Now there's a disk going around that will install SHCE on any computer; Win 7, 8.1, & 10, and when it's done it leaves a start icon on the desktop. (it runs through DOSBox - included)
Thanks!

I used the 60 second guide and now I have SH1 loaded along with my two patrol discs. It's up to v1.20 and it runs. (Do you happen to know what the last version is?) Now, I'm off to see what mods I can download and see if I can find Patrol Disc #3.
Great Assist! Thanks!

Glad to hear it.
I just used DOSBox to install only the original Version 1.0 game with 1996 copyright into Windows 8.1 Professional 64-bit, and had no difficulties.
(Do you happen to know what the last version is?)SUBSIM hosts two patches for Silent Hunter. The first patch upgrades any pre-Version 1.3 release to Version 1.3. The second patch upgrades a Version 1.3 installation to Version 1.31. I believe both patches have been compressed by the SUBSIM powers-that-be as 7-Zip archives to save space, so you need to use 7-Zip or some decompression utility that can handle .7z format files to get at the contents. These contents may also have to be decompressed as well, but eventually, you will get to the patches inside.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=cat&id=42
I am guessing that Patrol Disk #3 will also upgrade the game to Version 1.3, but I only have the first two Patrol Disks, so I can't say from personal experience.
Howdy!
Ahh, you can't get away from SH1 can ya?! LOL! I have it up to v1.3 using the last SubSim post. There's a problem with one of the Mod downloads. It downloads some .html file which is useless. I'll let ya know which one it is.
I'm hoping to get Patrol Disc #3. I had a download years ago but lost it.
That's why I love SH1, a true Campaign. I have SH2 but I never liked it.

You uploaded a file in the SH1 Download section: SH1database files. What exactly is this and what does it do? Is it some sort of utility used for editing things or does it modify the game in some way?
Unclear what it does.

Tried to install the SHReal mod but no luck. If you read the .txt file there is supposed to be a SHRsetup.exe file. Unfortunately, none exists in the 7z file. I tried several permutations but no luck. Any thoughts?

All of the files in the SHReal 7z archive go in the SILENT folder where SH.EXE is.
The SHRSETUP.EXE file was used for the old extraction method.
Double-click SHREAL.EXE to run SHReal and select the options you want.

GENERAL INFO:
This Historical Realism patch is aimed at the diehard realism fans,
those that distinguish between a game and a simulation.
The main purpose of this patch is to correct some historical
inaccuracies in Silent Hunter. It gives all of the S-class boats their
historical hull numbers, modifies the layout and/or performance of some
classes of subs to reflect historical wartime specifications, and
corrects a few annoying little things in the game like engaging the
enemy in a surface gun action while cruising along at 35-foot keel
depth. It will also allow you to mount the deck gun forward on the deck
of those fleet-class subs that have them mounted aft.
See the Details section for more information on what this patch does.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
DETAILS:
This is a historical realism patch for Silent Hunter. It gives the
player five options to implement in the game. You may select any or all
of the options to install, or choose to restore all options to their
original factory settings. The options are itemized below.
1. Historical hull numbers for the S-class boats
Silent Hunter's game designers, for some unknown reason, failed to give
the S-class submarines the hull numbers they were actually assigned
during WWII. This option fixes that by giving all of the S-class subs
their historical hull numbers.
2. Layout, performance, & depth modification for the S-class boats
Only a few of the S-class boats had an aft torpedo tube. None of those
that served in the Pacific during WWII had one. This option removes the
after torpedo tube and reload and puts 2 more reloads in the forward
torpedo room to maintain the total torpedoes carried at 12, the
historical load. Performance has also been modified to conform to
historical specifications, an option that will help you appreciate what
the crews on these boats had to deal with. Periscope depth is changed to
48 feet instead of 65 feet. Research indicates that the S-class boats
carried a 34-foot periscope and that it was used from the control room,
not the conning tower. Likewise, radar depth has been modified and the
maximum depth for surface operations such as manning the bridge and deck
gun has been changed to something a bit more realistic.
3. Layout, performance, & depth modification for the Narwhal-class boats
Both of the Narwhal-class submarines were soon relegated to special
mission duties during the war. They were used to transport personnel and
supplies in roles unsuited for surface vessels. Both spent the majority
of their war patrols in and around the Philippines. Some of the torpedo
tubes were external and when the Narwhal & Nautilus were modified to
assume the transport & supply role, much of the internal reloading
equipment was removed. This patch reflects this by reducing the torpedo
payload for the Narwhal class. They were also given a new 4-engine
powerplant, similar to the Gato and later classes. This option gives
these boats the new engine layout and corresponding performance
modifications. Depth settings are also corrected.
4. Depth modification for the fleet-type boats
This option modifies depths for the fleet boats to give more historical
or realistic settings.
5. Change deck gun position on the newer fleet-type submarines
On the newer fleet-type submarines, the deck gun could be mounted
forward or aft as the captain saw fit. Most players have a preference
for a deck gun mounted forward or aft and this option allows you to move
the deck gun from the aft position to the forward one on the
Salmon/Sargo, T-class, Gato, and Balao class boats.

I put the shreal.7z file into my Silent folder and unzipped all the files into the same. All I get when I run shreal.exe is the nice intro screen then a screen with graphics and little check boxes but no text, everything is blank. Something has to be missing. I think I had this same problem when I tried to install this on my old computer too.
I tried SHReal.exe in windows 10 and I get the same "16 bit version won't work on 64 bit" error message. And I tried it in DosBox, like all the other Mods, and got the above result. All the others worked fine.
Rob
P.S. FYI, I also noticed that after I use DoSBox my task bar no longer auto hides. I have to restart the Comp.to get it to auto hide again.
Kim Rønhof made a program called the 'Torpedo Change Tool' that eventually turned into a Swiss Army knife for SHCE, SH v.1.31
Not only can you change your torpedo loadout but it performs the same functions that Hawks SHReal does and even more. With it you can do everything that all of Hawks Utilities do.
I'll upload it again. Someone deleted it last time but I do have permission from Kim to upload it, plus he would be happy to see it used. We used it in Silent Hunter I Pacific Thunder Campaign (not the off road mudding group ; )
I'll post the link in a few minutes:

I'm guessing you are referring to the Torpedo Change Tool.
The functions that are available in the tool depend if you are in port or at sea and must be performed in the proper order because of the way Silent Hunter is programmed :
"But not all can be done a once, it depends on your patrol status (harbor or on patrol)."
From Page 2 of Torpedo Change Tool manual:
Install information
The program Torpedochange1600.exe must be saved into the Save folder.
The Maru.dat (NewMaru database) must be saved into the Data folder.
This Tool lets you change data in the SH data files.
It’s fairly simple to use, just follow the numbers – press buttons and choose “things” by the number (start with 1 !).
You can change the following data :
The Patrol area.
The Submarine type and name.
The Salmon/Sargo submarine specifications. Warning see note on use !!
The Narwhal/Argonaut fix Warning see note on use !!
The S-boat fix Warning see note on use !!
The gun position (for or aft) – but only on fleet submarines.
The crew experience level.
The Fog setting.
The torpedo load (type of torpedoes, and distribution into tubes and racks)
You can reload fuel and ammo for the gun.
The departure date.
You can change the tonnage, length, beam and draft of the 9 Maru types.
But not all can be done a once, it depends on your patrol status (harbor or on patrol).
Before you start .
The program must be saved in the Save folder (directory) under the Silent Hunter folder. Just unzip the program and this manual into the Save folder. Now just run the program TorpedoChange.exe
When changing a “harbor” file =def a career file saved before you leave the harbor.
You can change departure date, sub, crew experience, gun position (but only on fleet type subs), and Salmon/Sargo specifications. The No Restrictions tab - removes the start and stop date restriction on the subs you can pick. Use it if your sub is not visible. NOTE the Argonaut (SS-166) the SS-159 are only visible if you replaced your Carsub.dat with the updated Carsub.dat file.
When changing an “on patrol” file = def a career file saved after you’ve left the harbor.
You can change torpedo types and number, and position the different torpedoes, refuel and reload ammo for the gun. Reset fog/haze.
Page 3:
The patrol area can be changed if you choose a harbor file AND if NO file is chosen. (but not if you choose a patrol file)
How to use the program:
Depending on whether you are at the beginning of a career or not, the program is used differently.
Torpedoes, fuel and ammo can only be changed at sea (using a patrol file), this is due to a technicality in the way Silent Hunter is programmed.
You can start up in 2 different ways.
1) Choose a patrol area then go to SH and start a career or
2) Create a career in SH and then go the TCT program and change the patrol area.
PLEASE, take 15 minutes and read the manual for this powerful multi-function tool. Used properly it can do a lot to improve your Silent Hunter I experience (more fun).
Happy Hunting!
Howdy!
Oh, I went thru the manual in detail when I first installed it. I didn't want to change something by mistake since it literally took me days to get it running properly. I have it set up properly as directed but when I run the .exe file and get the screen to select a boat, all of them are listed as "On Patrol". I have three saved files: One on Patrol and two are in Port. When I select the game I know is the "On Patrol" game and get to the Input Torpedoes screen all the tubes and reloads are shown as empty, which they are not. Plus, when you are on Patrol you are supposed to be able to replenish fuel and shells for the gun. Doesn't happen.
I'll go back and re-read the manual and make sure I'm not missing something, but I think not.
Festus
I'm curious, what class the three boats are and what is the date for each? Were these Careers started when the TCT program was in the Save folder or before?
Have you been on patrol with any of the three boats before the TCT knew about them?
Maybe compatibility mode for the TCT needs to be changed to Win 98? (I don't have Windows 10) I know the TCT worked under Windows XP too.
Could try renaming the SAVE folder to SAVEBAK so you don't lose your Careers, and make a new SAVE folder in the SILENT folder, put the TCT program in that, and start a new Career as directed by the TCT PDF manual or Word DOC manual - whatever one you're using.
