Maxwell was remanded in custody following a short hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court this afternoon.
A serving member of the British armed forces has been charged with terrorism offences, Scotland Yard said.
Ciaran Maxwell, who was arrested at his base in Taunton last week, has appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court charged with three offences including obtaining items to be used in explosives.
Following a short hearing, he was remanded in custody and will appear in court again on Monday.
The 30-year-old serviceman from Exminster, Devon, is also facing charges of possession of cannabis and possession of articles in connection with fraud. The charges include:
:: Engaging in conduct in preparation for assisting another to commit acts of terrorism, including research leading to the creation of a library of documents likely to be useful to terrorists.
Sure it's rough accusations, and when there is an ongoing investigation, it is likely that the police have decided not to release too much to the media, but what is clearly is that he is in a difficult situation currently.
