My wife and I have always discussed taking in a senior dog since by and large puppies find a home quickly. Near our home is a Senior Dog Sanctuary. Upon visiting the site and seeing one little blind pup we went to take a look....fully knowing this one was coming home to spend her twilight years with us. We were advised she had some tumors that were scheduled to be removed by the vet. We were asked if the possibility that these tumors could be cancerous would that keep us from adopting her. Of course not. We understand the seniors will come with some health issues.
This is Wendy's story. Wendy is 13-15 years old. She has cataracts and is completely blind. Has 3 tumors removed and 4 peas size tumors that were left for now. She as found wandering the streets with matted hair, lost and confused. It appears the owners just let her go and more than likely because they saw $$$ for surgery with her tumors. Through word of mouth the owners were found who subsequently "turned Wendy over" to the sanctuary. The owners had simply gave up on Wendy.
Wendy now resides with my and my wife. Two other dogs, a cat and two crack headed parrots. She has had several tumors removed and recovered. We did not test to see if these are cancerous. At her age we would not look to treat them. Today Wendy went to the hair dressers.
